SP Kamaldeep Goyal issues public advisory, directs police to intensify patrolling and crack down on drinking near water bodies

Following a series of tragic drowning incidents in the district, the Yamunanagar Police have issued a public safety advisory urging parents and guardians to closely monitor their children’s activities and prevent them from visiting canals, rivers, ponds and swimming pools without adult supervision.
The advisory, issued by Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamaldeep Goyal, comes in response to recent incidents that have claimed several lives and raised serious concerns about public safety during the summer season.
According to the police, children and young people often gather in groups to swim in canals, rivers or ponds to escape the heat, despite lacking swimming skills or awareness of the dangers posed by strong water currents. Such situations frequently lead to fatal accidents that leave families devastated.
“These unfortunate incidents not only result in the loss of precious lives but also leave families emotionally shattered for years. Preventing such tragedies requires awareness, responsibility and collective cooperation,” the advisory stated.
The police have appealed to all parents to remain vigilant, especially during school vacations, when children are more likely to plan outings with friends to nearby water bodies without informing their families. Guardians have been advised to ensure that minors do not visit such locations alone under any circumstances.
The advisory also highlighted another growing concern—the consumption of alcohol and other intoxicating substances near canals and rivers. Police said it has often been observed that some individuals park their vehicles near canal banks, consume liquor or drugs and later enter the water, significantly increasing the risk of drowning due to impaired judgment and loss of balance.
To prevent such incidents, SP Kamaldeep Goyal has directed all Station House Officers (SHOs) in the district to strengthen regular patrolling and maintain strict surveillance around canals, rivers, ponds and other vulnerable water bodies falling within their jurisdictions.
Police personnel have also been instructed to conduct awareness drives in nearby villages and urban areas, educating residents about the dangers of swimming in unsafe locations and the importance of constant parental supervision.
In addition, strict action has been ordered against people found consuming alcohol or other intoxicants near canals and riverbanks. Police teams will monitor such areas regularly, and violators will face legal action in accordance with the law.
SP Goyal appealed to citizens to cooperate with the administration in ensuring public safety and urged community members to immediately inform the police if they notice children or youths engaging in risky activities near water bodies.
He stressed that timely intervention by parents, local residents and police can save lives and help prevent avoidable tragedies.
With temperatures continuing to rise, the district police have reiterated that prevention is the most effective safeguard against drowning accidents and have urged everyone to act responsibly to ensure a safe summer for children and young people.
