In a significant initiative to promote sustainable water management and environmental awareness, the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) team of the Municipal Corporation, Yamunanagar-Jagadhri, organised a ‘Catch the Rain’ awareness programme at the Government Middle School, Labour Colony. The campaign aimed to educate students about the importance of rainwater harvesting, groundwater conservation and scientific waste management, encouraging them to become ambassadors of environmental protection within their communities.
During the interactive session, students were sensitised to the growing challenges of water scarcity and the urgent need to conserve every drop of rainwater. Officials explained the functioning of Rainwater Harvesting Systems (RWH) and demonstrated how rainwater can be collected, stored and used effectively for various domestic and environmental purposes. The students were informed that rainwater harvesting not only supplements future water requirements but also plays a crucial role in recharging groundwater, reducing waterlogging and ensuring long-term water security.
The programme also highlighted the importance of community participation in conserving natural resources. Students were encouraged to adopt water-saving practices in their daily lives and motivate their families and neighbours to install rainwater harvesting systems wherever feasible.
Supporting the initiative, School Principal Om Prakash urged students to make water conservation a lifelong habit and spread awareness among their family members and local communities. He said the younger generation has an important role in building a water-secure future and protecting natural resources for coming generations.
Adding another dimension to the awareness drive, IEC Expert Akash Kumar of the Swachh Bharat Mission educated students on the Four-Bin Waste Segregation System. He explained the importance of separating wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and domestic hazardous waste at the source before handing it over to the Municipal Corporation’s door-to-door waste collection vehicles.
He emphasised that proper segregation enables scientific processing and recycling of waste, reduces landfill burden and contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment. Students were also encouraged to minimise waste generation by adopting the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) in their daily lives.
Highlighting the broader objective of the campaign, Mayor Suman Bahmani said water conservation is one of the most pressing needs of the present time. She noted that if every citizen adopts rainwater harvesting and uses water responsibly, the threat of future water scarcity can be significantly reduced. She appealed to residents to treat every drop of water as a valuable natural resource and actively participate in conservation efforts.
Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad said the Municipal Corporation is working consistently to transform both cleanliness and water conservation into people’s movements through sustained awareness campaigns across schools and communities. He appealed to citizens to make rainwater harvesting and scientific waste segregation an integral part of their daily routine and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener and environmentally sustainable Yamunanagar.
At the conclusion of the programme, students took a pledge to conserve water, practise proper waste segregation and spread awareness about these initiatives among their families, friends and neighbourhoods, reaffirming their commitment to protecting the environment for future generations.
