Survey begins across city as Municipal Corporation prepares long-term drainage blueprint; Mayor Suman Bahmani seeks public cooperation

In a major step towards building climate-resilient urban infrastructure, the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation has initiated work on an ambitious 50-year Master Plan aimed at permanently addressing the city’s recurring waterlogging and urban flooding problems.
To prepare the comprehensive drainage blueprint, the civic body has engaged Yash Innovative Solution, a specialised consultancy agency, which has begun an extensive field survey across the city. The first phase of the exercise covers Wards 1 to 7, where teams are collecting technical and geographical data to identify flood-prone locations and assess the existing drainage infrastructure.
To review the progress of the project, Mayor Suman Bahmani chaired a meeting with Municipal Corporation officials, representatives of the consultancy agency and councillors from the concerned wards. During the meeting, the mayor directed the agency to maintain close coordination with elected representatives to ensure that every vulnerable area is included in the survey and no location is overlooked.
“This master plan will lay the foundation for a safer and better Yamunanagar. The objective is to create a scientific drainage system that protects the city from flooding and waterlogging for the next five decades,” Bahmani said.
She stressed that accurate ground-level data would be crucial for preparing an effective long-term drainage strategy and urged the agency to work closely with local representatives, who possess first-hand knowledge of their respective wards.
During the meeting, councillors from Wards 1 to 7 briefed the survey team about the geographical conditions of their areas, highlighting existing stormwater drainage lines, sewerage networks, open drains and locations that routinely experience waterlogging during the monsoon season.
Technical experts from the consultancy agency and Municipal Corporation officials also discussed engineering measures to improve the drainage system. Among the proposals was the installation of screen filters (protective mesh) at key junctions where stormwater drains connect with sewer lines and major drains. The measure is expected to prevent solid waste from entering the drainage network and improve the overall efficiency of water flow during heavy rainfall.
Mayor Bahmani appealed to residents to extend full cooperation to the survey teams by providing accurate information regarding flood-prone areas, blocked drains and other local issues that could help planners develop a comprehensive solution.
She said the success of the project would depend not only on technical planning but also on active public participation. “Every resident has valuable local knowledge that can contribute to making this master plan more effective. Public cooperation will help ensure that Yamunanagar remains protected from waterlogging for decades to come,” she added.
Officials present during the meeting included Executive Officer Vikas Dhiman, Assistant Engineer Rajesh Sharma, Junior Engineer Gopal Saini, councillors Reena Rastogi, Arun Kumar, Jayant Swami, Ruchi Kamboj, Bhanu Pratap, Ankit Kumar and Priyank Sharma, along with representatives of Yash Innovative Solution.
The Municipal Corporation expects the survey to serve as the foundation for a modern stormwater management system capable of meeting the city’s infrastructure needs over the next 50 years.
