Youth Red Cross Unit and Shivaji Press Club join hands to promote environmental conservation and encourage students to nurture trees

Promoting love for nature, environmental conservation and a sense of responsibility towards future generations, the Youth Red Cross Unit of Hindu Girls College, Jagadhri, in collaboration with Shivaji Press Club, Yamunanagar, organised a plantation drive under the theme ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’. The initiative aimed at creating greater environmental awareness among students and members of society and encouraging people to plant more trees, protect them and ensure their long-term care.
Haryana Staff Selection Commission member Master Amar Singh attended the programme as the chief guest. Jagadhri SDM Vishwanath and Yamunanagar DSP Rajat Gulia were among the special guests, while social worker and Bhim Awardee Satpal Singh Rosie presided over the programme. The guests highlighted the importance of environmental protection and appealed to citizens to make tree plantation and conservation an integral part of their lives.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers said that planting a tree in the name of one’s mother or parents is not only an expression of love and gratitude towards them but also a beautiful way of expressing respect for Mother Earth. They appealed to every person to plant at least one tree and take responsibility for its protection and growth. They emphasised that protecting trees is essential for protecting the planet and that every citizen can contribute to environmental conservation through plantation and regular care of trees.
Hindu Girls College Principal Monika Khurana, Shivaji Press Club president Ravinder Chauhan and former principal Dr Ravish Chauhan welcomed chief guest Master Amar Singh with a bouquet. The presence of members of Shivaji Press Club added further significance to the campaign, which sought to connect environmental responsibility with community participation.
Shivaji Press Club members Ravinder Chauhan, Amit Gupta, Dr Ravish Chauhan, Nitin Singla, Ram Kishan Kashyap, Sanjeev Gupta, Ravi Kant, Savita Kalyan, Ravi Kumar, Mohammad Saifi, Antim Prajapati, Ali Jaan Raunak, Sardari Lal and Satish Dhiman were present on the occasion.
Yamunanagar DSP Rajat Gulia also participated in the plantation drive and planted a sapling. Addressing the students, he said merely planting a tree was not enough. The real responsibility begins after plantation, when the sapling needs regular care, protection and attention to ensure healthy growth.
He encouraged students to take personal responsibility for the saplings planted by them and monitor their development. He said that if young people develop the habit of caring for trees from an early age, it can create a long-term positive impact on the environment and encourage others in their families and communities to follow the same practice.
Jagadhri SDM Vishwanath also participated in the plantation activity and planted a sapling. He said environmental conservation is no longer merely an option but a collective responsibility of society. Every individual, he said, should plant at least one tree during his or her lifetime and make a commitment to protect it.
He observed that the ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’ campaign provides a meaningful connection between love for one’s mother and one’s responsibility towards nature. He said planting and protecting trees today would help ensure clean air, a healthier environment and a safer future for coming generations.
Social worker and Bhim Awardee Satpal Singh Rosie also planted a sapling and extended his support to the environmental initiative. He appreciated the efforts of the college and Shivaji Press Club in bringing students and members of society together for a cause that has long-term significance.
Principal Monika Khurana said the role of educational institutions is not limited to providing academic education. Developing environmental sensitivity and a sense of responsibility among students is equally important. She said a tree is not merely a sapling but represents a commitment towards clean air, a healthy environment and a better future.
She said the ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’ campaign connects environmental conservation with the emotions of love, respect and gratitude towards mothers and parents. She urged students not to treat plantation as a one-day activity but to make it a continuing part of their lifestyle. She also called upon them to ensure that the trees they plant are properly protected and nurtured.
Programme in-charge Dr Sonia Sharma said activities of this nature strengthen students’ love for nature and develop sensitivity and responsibility towards the environment. She urged students to become ambassadors of environmental awareness and motivate their families, friends and communities to participate in plantation and conservation activities.
She said that when people develop a genuine bond with nature and take care of it, the environment in turn supports human life by providing cleaner air, ecological balance and a healthier atmosphere. She encouraged students to carry the message of the campaign beyond the college campus and inspire more people to participate.
Students participated enthusiastically in the plantation drive. Alongside planting saplings, they also displayed their creativity in a poster-making competition organised on the theme ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’. Through colourful and message-oriented posters, students highlighted the importance of saving trees, protecting nature and building a greener and healthier future.
The posters conveyed messages about environmental protection, sustainable living and the responsibility of the present generation towards those who will inherit the planet in the future. The activity provided students with an opportunity to express their environmental concerns creatively while reinforcing the central message of the plantation campaign.
The efforts and coordination of programme in-charge Dr Sonia Sharma and co-in-charge Tanu were appreciated for the successful organisation of the event. Shivaji Press Club president Ravinder Chauhan also called upon everyone to continue working collectively and consistently for environmental conservation.
The programme concluded with a collective resolve to transform the message of ‘One Tree in Mother’s Name’ into a sustained environmental movement. The organisers emphasised that every tree planted today can become a valuable gift for future generations, while every tree protected is an important step towards safeguarding the earth.
The initiative also highlighted the importance of involving educational institutions, civil society organisations and young people in environmental conservation. Through such community-driven programmes, the organisers said, awareness can be transformed into action and plantation can become a long-term commitment rather than a symbolic activity.
