Awareness seminar and practical training session highlight the importance of timely first aid during accidents, cardiac emergencies and other critical situations

The Youth Red Cross Unit of Mukand Lal National College, Yamunanagar, in collaboration with St John Ambulance (India), Yamunanagar, organised an awareness seminar and practical first-aid training camp to mark World First Aid Day. More than 100 students, along with members of the college management, participated in the programme, which focused on equipping young people with essential skills to respond effectively during accidents and medical emergencies.
The programme was presided over by college Principal Dr Manohar Goyal and was organised under the supervision of Youth Red Cross in-charge Dr Savita Garg, Dr Rameshwar Groch and Niket. The organisers said the initiative was aimed at encouraging students to acquire practical first-aid skills that can prove valuable before professional medical assistance becomes available.
First Aid Awareness for Students
Addressing the students, Dr Manohar Goyal emphasised that basic first-aid knowledge should reach as many people as possible because timely assistance can play an important role in saving the lives of people injured in accidents and other emergencies.
He said the primary objective of the programme was to motivate students to come forward and assist injured people during accidents and emergencies. World First Aid Day, he added, provides an opportunity to spread awareness about basic emergency care and encourage people to develop the confidence required to respond responsibly when someone needs immediate help.
The principal also stressed that first aid is not limited to healthcare professionals. Ordinary citizens who receive appropriate training can provide timely assistance to an injured person while waiting for an ambulance or professional medical care.
Theme Highlights Needs of Migrant Communities
Sanjeev Dhiman, acting secretary of the District Red Cross Society, said awareness and training programmes of this nature are organised under the guidance of the organisation’s president and Deputy Commissioner Preeti. He said the Red Cross regularly conducts first-aid training programmes in schools, colleges and industrial establishments across the district.
Dhiman said this year’s World First Aid Day theme, “First Aid in Migration Contexts”, has particular relevance for Yamunanagar and the Jagadhri industrial area, where workers from different states are employed in factories and other industrial units.
He said workplace accidents can occur unexpectedly, making basic first-aid training important for employees and members of the wider community. The organisation conducts training programmes across the district so that injured persons can receive immediate assistance and be moved towards professional medical care without unnecessary delay.
Dhiman also appealed to residents to keep a first-aid kit in every vehicle so that essential supplies are available during road accidents, injuries or other emergencies.
Hands-on Training Covers Multiple Emergencies
First-aid instructor Pramjit Singh Hundal conducted the practical training session and provided students with demonstrations on several emergency-response techniques. The session focused on practical application so that participants could understand how to respond safely and effectively in real-life situations.
- Emergency assistance during a heart attack and basic artificial respiration techniques
- Use of bandages and other basic measures for fractures and bleeding
- Safe handling and movement of an injured person using a human stretcher
- Basic rescue and first-aid measures during fire and drowning emergencies
The students were taught how to handle an injured person carefully and transport the victim towards a medical facility or ambulance while avoiding unnecessary movement that could worsen an injury. The organisers said practical demonstrations can help students respond with greater confidence instead of remaining helpless during an emergency.
The training also highlighted the importance of personal safety during rescue operations, particularly in incidents involving fire and drowning. Students were encouraged to understand their limitations and seek professional medical assistance whenever necessary.
Appeal for Wider First-Aid Training
District Training Officer Shashi Bhushan appealed to residents of Yamunanagar to obtain formal first-aid training. He said accidents can occur anywhere, at any time and to anyone, making first-aid knowledge an important life skill.
Bhushan said a properly trained person present at the scene of an accident can become an important link between an injured individual and professional medical care. He encouraged students, young people and members of the public to participate in recognised first-aid training programmes.
The organisers said expanding the number of trained first-aid responders in educational institutions, workplaces and communities can strengthen society’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies. Students who acquire these skills can also share basic awareness with family members and others around them.
The programme was attended by more than 100 students and members of the college management. Sunita Sharma, Project Manager, was also present on behalf of the organisation.
The initiative reinforced the message that first aid is a valuable life skill and that practical training can help young people respond more confidently and responsibly during accidents, injuries and other emergencies. A similar first-aid training initiative was also recently reported at Kurukshetra University by Pen of Democracy.
