Three More Arrested in Shiva Tyagi Murder Case

The Crime Branch-I team has arrested three more accused in connection with the alleged murder of 23-year-old Shiva Tyagi, who died after being assaulted with sticks and iron rods in Housing Board, Sector 18. With these arrests, the total number of accused arrested in the case has risen to six, police said.

According to the police spokesperson, the arrests were made under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal. The latest accused have been identified as Satyam, son of Brijlal; Lakshya; and Kanishk, son of Satbir Singh. Police said the three were produced before a court and taken on remand for further questioning.

Crime Branch-I in-charge Rajkumar said Shiva Tyagi, a resident of Mahadev village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, had arrived on September 3 to stay with his uncle Vicky in Housing Board, Sector 18. Ashish Thakur, a friend of Shiva’s uncle, also lived in the neighbourhood.

According to the account provided by police, a dispute had arisen between Ashish and his wife. On September 7, Shiva and his uncle went to Ashish’s house in an attempt to help resolve the disagreement between the couple. During the interaction, Ashish allegedly began abusing them. Shiva and his uncle then left the house.

Police said that the following day, Ashish allegedly arrived with his brother Himanshu, Kanika, Lakshya, Badal and around eight to ten other people and attacked Shiva and his uncle. The group allegedly assaulted them with sticks and iron rods. Shiva sustained an injury to his head and was admitted to a hospital. He was later referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) for further treatment, where he died during treatment.

Police initially registered a case of assault on September 10. Following Shiva’s death, the murder charge was added to the case, according to the police account. The sequence of events and the alleged roles of those involved remain subject to the ongoing investigation and legal process.

Before the latest arrests, police had arrested Rajkumar alias Lukka, a resident of Khera Farm, Ashish Thakur and Ankit. They were sent to judicial custody. The arrest of Satyam, Lakshya and Kanishk has taken the total number of arrests in the case to six. Police said the three latest accused were produced in court and remanded for questioning. No further details about the specific roles allegedly played by each of the newly arrested men were provided in the police statement.

Man Arrested in Separate Betting Case; ₹5,150 Recovered

In a separate operation, Crime Branch-I arrested a man allegedly involved in public betting and recovered ₹5,150 in cash, the police spokesperson said. The action was taken as part of a special district-level drive against illegal activities under the directions of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal.

Crime Branch-I in-charge Rajkumar said the team had received confidential information that a person was openly conducting betting at a public place. Acting on the information, the team formed a special police party and reached the location identified during the inquiry. Police personnel cordoned off the area and watched the suspected activity.

After confirming their suspicion, the team intervened and arrested Gaurav, son of Surender Kumar, a resident of Lakshmi Garden, allegedly while he was conducting betting. During a search, police recovered ₹5,150 in cash, which they described as betting money.

Police said a case was registered against Gaurav under the relevant provisions of the gambling law and that further legal proceedings were being carried out. The accused was being questioned as investigators sought to establish whether other people were involved in the alleged betting activity. Police did not provide further details about any suspected network or additional arrests.

The Superintendent of Police praised the Crime Branch-I team for the action and directed officers to continue taking firm steps against illegal gambling and betting. Police said enforcement efforts would continue to maintain law and order and deter unlawful activities in the district.

NEWS NOTE
The two cases concern separate investigations: one relates to Shiva Tyagi’s death following an alleged assault, while the other concerns alleged betting and the recovery of cash. Police said further legal action in both matters would proceed in accordance with the law. Allegations remain subject to investigation and court proceedings.
