Yamunanagar Police have arrested a man allegedly involved in transporting a consignment of heroin from Uttar Pradesh into Haryana and recovered 261.44 grams of the narcotic substance, police officials said.
The seized heroin, commonly known as smack, is estimated by the police to be worth around ₹10 lakh. The accused was intercepted near the Kalanour border during an operation carried out by the Anti-Burglary Staff-cum-Anti-Narcotic Cell-II.
According to the police, a case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. He was produced before a court and subsequently remanded to police custody for four days for further questioning and investigation.
The operation was conducted under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal, as part of the district police’s continuing campaign against narcotics trafficking and the illegal supply of drugs.
Police said various teams across the district have been carrying out operations against suspected drug traffickers and individuals allegedly involved in the transportation and distribution of narcotic substances.
According to Anti-Burglary Staff-cum-Anti-Narcotic Cell-II In-charge Raman Chandel, the police received specific intelligence that a person would allegedly enter Haryana from Uttar Pradesh through the Kalanour border while carrying a significant quantity of narcotics.
Acting on the information, a police team was formed and deployed at the border area. The team included Sub-Inspector Gulshan, Satish Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector Kuldeep, Sushil and Rohit.
The officers reached the Kalanour border and established surveillance based on the intelligence input. During the operation, the team reportedly noticed a man approaching the area on foot.
Police said the suspect was intercepted and detained for questioning. A duty magistrate, ETO Saurabh, was called to the spot before the search procedure was carried out.
According to the police, the search was conducted in the presence of the duty magistrate, during which 261.44 grams of heroin were allegedly recovered from the accused.
During preliminary questioning, the accused was identified as Danish, son of Sameem, a resident of Mohalla Saraya in Gangoh, Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
Following the recovery, police registered a case against him under the NDPS Act. The accused was later produced before the court, which granted four days of police remand to allow investigators to conduct further questioning.
Police officials said the investigation is now focused on determining the alleged source of the narcotics and identifying the person or persons who were expected to receive the consignment.
Investigators will also examine the route allegedly used to transport the heroin and attempt to identify whether other individuals were involved in arranging, financing, transporting or distributing the narcotic substance.
Raman Chandel said the accused is being questioned during the remand period and that further information is expected to emerge regarding the intended destination of the recovered heroin.
Police are also attempting to determine where the accused allegedly obtained the substance and whether the consignment was part of a larger narcotics supply network operating across state borders.
The seizure is being treated as part of the district police’s broader campaign against drug trafficking. Police teams have been instructed to remain alert to intelligence inputs concerning the movement of narcotic substances and to take strict action against those allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade.
Officials said that the investigation would not be limited to the arrest of the alleged carrier. If evidence emerges during questioning, further action may be taken against other suspected individuals connected with the supply chain.
The police are expected to examine possible links between suppliers, transporters, intermediaries and intended recipients as the investigation progresses.
According to the information provided by police, the accused had previously been named in two theft cases, which are currently pending before the court. Those cases are separate from the present narcotics investigation.
Police said the current case will be investigated on the basis of evidence recovered during the operation, statements recorded during questioning and any additional information obtained during the police remand.
The Kalanour border area is being examined as part of the investigation to understand the alleged movement of the accused into Haryana. Police may also use available evidence and intelligence to determine whether the same route has been used in other suspected narcotics trafficking cases.
The four-day remand is expected to be important for investigators seeking information about the alleged supply chain. Police officials said they would continue questioning the accused to establish the intended delivery point and identify possible associates.
The arrest comes amid continuing efforts by Yamunanagar Police to take action against narcotics trafficking and disrupt the movement of illegal drugs in the district.
