Mayor Suman Bahmani has directed the engineering wing of the Municipal Corporation to prepare a comprehensive plan for the conservation, beautification, renovation and long-term maintenance of ponds located across the municipal area of Yamunanagar.
The directions were issued during a meeting with officials of the engineering branch, where the Mayor reviewed the need to protect the city’s existing natural water bodies and develop them in a planned and sustainable manner. She instructed the concerned officials to prepare a complete list of all ponds falling within the Municipal Corporation limits and assess their present condition before preparing individual development and maintenance projects.
The officials have also been asked to prepare detailed estimates for the renovation and beautification of the ponds so that necessary conservation and development works can be planned according to the actual requirements of each location.
Mayor Suman Bahmani said that ponds are an important part of the city’s natural heritage and their protection should be linked with broader environmental conservation and public welfare efforts. She said the Municipal Corporation must take a systematic approach to preserving these water bodies rather than allowing them to deteriorate due to neglect, pollution, encroachment or poor maintenance.
She directed officials to assess the physical condition of every pond and prepare development proposals based on its specific needs. The proposed planning is expected to focus on conservation as well as the improvement of the surrounding environment.
According to the directions issued during the meeting, special attention will be given to the cleanliness of ponds, the quality and condition of water, sanitation around the water bodies and protection against illegal encroachments. The Mayor said that the Municipal Corporation should ensure that every pond is examined on the basis of its existing condition before finalising any renovation or beautification work.
The initiative is aimed at bringing greater focus to the protection of natural water resources within the expanding urban landscape of Yamunanagar. Ponds have traditionally played an important role in water conservation and the local environment, and their proper maintenance can contribute to cleaner surroundings and improved ecological conditions.
Mayor Bahmani said that the conservation of ponds can promote water preservation while also benefiting the city’s environment. She suggested that green spaces could be developed around suitable ponds and that beautification works could be undertaken wherever required to make such areas cleaner, more useful and more attractive for residents.
The development of greenery around ponds could also improve the overall appearance of the surrounding areas and help create a more pleasant environment for local residents. The Mayor emphasised, however, that any beautification or development initiative should be based on the actual condition and requirements of the individual water body.
The Municipal Corporation has been asked to prepare projects that include both immediate improvement works and a system for regular maintenance. The objective is not limited to one-time cleaning or renovation but also includes ensuring that the ponds remain protected and properly maintained in the future.
Mayor Suman Bahmani said the protection of natural water sources is among the priorities of the Municipal Corporation. She stressed that ponds should not be allowed to become dumping grounds for garbage and waste.
The issue of waste disposal around ponds was also highlighted during the meeting. The Mayor said that awareness among citizens would be an important part of the conservation effort. Residents will be encouraged to cooperate with the Municipal Corporation and avoid throwing garbage or other waste into ponds.
She said public participation is essential for maintaining the cleanliness and long-term protection of community resources. While the Municipal Corporation will be responsible for planning, conservation and maintenance activities, residents can also play an important role by protecting local water bodies and reporting activities that damage or pollute them.
The Mayor further directed officials to remain vigilant against encroachments around ponds. Illegal occupation of land surrounding natural water bodies can affect their size, drainage and overall ecological condition. Therefore, protection from encroachment will be treated as an important component of the proposed conservation and development plans.
Officials have been asked to prepare the required documentation, estimates and project proposals after completing the inventory and assessment of ponds in the municipal area. The detailed planning process will help the Municipal Corporation identify priority locations and determine the type of conservation, renovation or beautification work required.
The proposed initiative reflects an effort to combine environmental protection with civic development. Besides protecting water resources, cleaner and better-maintained pond areas can contribute to improved neighbourhood surroundings and greater public awareness about environmental responsibility.
Mayor Bahmani appealed to residents of Yamunanagar to actively support the Municipal Corporation in keeping ponds clean and protected. She urged citizens not to treat ponds as places for dumping household or commercial waste and to recognise their importance as natural community assets.
She said protecting the city’s ponds is a shared responsibility and that long-term conservation will require cooperation between the Municipal Corporation, officials and local residents.
With the engineering wing now directed to prepare a complete inventory, cost estimates and project proposals, the Municipal Corporation is expected to move towards a more structured approach to the conservation, renovation, beautification and maintenance of Yamunanagar’s ponds, with emphasis on cleanliness, water protection, green surroundings and prevention of encroachments.
