Selja says last-minute venue change reflects the BJP government’s discomfort with student voices, asserts Rahul Gandhi’s interaction will witness an even stronger turnout.

Congress MP from Sirsa, former Union Minister and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Kumari Selja alleged that the last-minute change of venue for Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s proposed ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj‘ (Voice of Students) programme in Dehradun reflected the BJP government’s discomfort with student participation and democratic dialogue. In a statement, Selja said the cancellation of permission for the previously approved venue and the subsequent relocation of the event at the eleventh hour was “unfortunate” and contrary to democratic values. She said attempts to restrict platforms where students and young people can express their concerns would not weaken their resolve or diminish the significance of the programme.”The Congress has consistently raised issues relating to education, employment, examination reforms and the future of students. Changing the venue cannot suppress the voice of young people or reduce their enthusiasm,” Selja said. She added that students from across Uttarakhand were expected to participate in large numbers and were eager to engage directly with Rahul Gandhi on issues affecting higher education, employment opportunities, examination systems and youth aspirations. Selja said Rahul Gandhi has consistently highlighted concerns relating to students and young people both inside and outside Parliament, which, she claimed, has strengthened his connect with the youth.Expressing confidence in the success of the event, she said the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj‘ programme would witness enthusiastic participation and provide students with an opportunity to articulate their views on issues of public importance.According to the Congress leader, the interaction is scheduled to be held on July 17 at 5 pm at Bannu School Ground, Race Course, Dehradun, where Rahul Gandhi will interact directly with students.

In a separate development, Kumari Selja said she has written to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, urging immediate intervention to resolve the recurring electricity supply disruptions affecting Kalanwali and adjoining areas in Sirsa district. In her letter, Selja stated that frequent technical faults in the Chormar–Kalanwali main power line have resulted in repeated power outages, adversely affecting residents, traders, farmers, students, healthcare institutions and small industries. She urged the Chief Minister to direct the concerned department to undertake a comprehensive technical inspection of the transmission line, carry out capacity enhancement and necessary repairs, and make alternative arrangements wherever required to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply. Selja said a permanent solution to the issue was essential in the larger public interest, particularly during the ongoing summer season when electricity demand remains high.
