Yamunanagar Police Urges Citizens to Hand Over Found Mobile Phones to Nearest Police Station

Yamunanagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Kamaldeep Goyal has appealed to the public to immediately hand over any mobile phone found on roads, in markets or at public places to the nearest police station or police outpost.  

He cautioned that retaining a lost mobile phone or attempting to sell it amounts to an offence under the law and may invite strict legal action.  Highlighting the importance of mobile phones in today’s digital age, the SP said a smartphone is no longer just a communication device but also stores sensitive personal information, banking details, official documents, digital identities and emergency contacts.

 Losing a mobile phone can therefore cause significant inconvenience and financial risk to its owner.   Goyal said police stations regularly receive complaints from people who lose their mobile phones in public places.   Investigations in several cases have reveale d that the phones were picked up by passers-by who chose to keep them instead of informing the police.  Such acts, he said, are treated as dishonest misappropriation of property and can lead to criminal proceedings under the relevant provisions of law. 

 He urged citizens to act responsibly by depositing any found mobile phone with the nearest police station.  Police can identify the rightful owner through the device’s IMEI number and other technical details before returning it to them.

The SP added that people who voluntarily hand over lost property set an example of honesty and contribute to building trust within society.  The SP also pointed out that many mobile phones contain critical information such as medical records, emergency contacts, hospital communications and other data that may become crucial in emergencies.

Returning such devices to their owners promptly could, in some situations, even help save lives.  Warning against misuse, Goyal said anyone found retaining or attempting to sell a lost mobile phone would face legal action.  He noted that with modern technology, police are capable of tracing mobile devices and identifying those in possession of them.

Appealing for greater public awareness, the SP urged residents to share the message widely and encourage responsible behaviour.  He said honesty and respect for others’ property are essential for a law-abiding society and assured that the police would continue to recognise and appreciate citizens who demonstrate such integrity.
