Municipal Corporation accelerates drainage improvement works; screening nets to stop plastic waste from choking underground drains

With the monsoon season underway, the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation has intensified efforts to strengthen the city’s drainage network and prevent waterlogging in vulnerable areas. As part of the ongoing campaign, Mayor Suman Bahmani conducted an inspection of the main drain connecting Sector-17 to Professor Colony to review the progress of cleaning and flood-prevention measures.

Accompanied by Junior Engineer Ajay Kumar and other civic officials, the Mayor visited the drain near Swami Vivekanand School, where screening nets are being installed to prevent plastic waste and other solid debris from entering the underground drainage system.

During the inspection, Bahmani directed officials to ensure that all monsoon preparedness works are completed on priority and warned against any negligence in maintaining the city’s drainage infrastructure.

“The Municipal Corporation is fully committed to ensuring that residents do not face inconvenience due to waterlogging during the monsoon. Our teams will remain on round-the-clock alert, and strict action will be taken against anyone found negligent in sanitation or drainage maintenance,” she said.

The Mayor instructed officials to identify every location where open drains discharge into underground drains or sewer lines and install durable screening nets at such points. She explained that plastic bags, polythene and other floating waste often block underground drainage systems, resulting in severe waterlogging during heavy rainfall.

“These screening nets will trap solid waste before it enters the drainage network, allowing rainwater to flow freely and significantly reducing the chances of drain blockages,” Bahmani said.

She also directed that at least one sanitation worker be deployed at every screening net during rainfall to immediately remove accumulated waste and ensure uninterrupted water flow.

According to the Municipal Corporation, the initiative is part of a comprehensive monsoon preparedness plan aimed at improving urban drainage, preventing flooding and ensuring faster disposal of rainwater across the city.

Officials said continuous monitoring of drains and prompt removal of waste will remain a priority throughout the rainy season to minimise disruption to residents.
