Yamunanagar Police have arrested an accused in two alleged jewellery theft cases involving women.

Yamunanagar Police have arrested a man allegedly involved in separate incidents in which women were befriended or lured into a conversation before their gold and silver jewellery was allegedly taken away. The arrest was made by teams of the Anti-Burglary Staff and Anti-Narcotic Cell-II as part of the district police’s ongoing drive against crime and criminals.
Police said the action was carried out on the directions of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal, who has instructed district police teams to intensify efforts against criminal activities and identify those involved in repeated offences. The arrested accused has been produced before a court and taken on police remand for further questioning.
Raman Chandel, in-charge of the police team, said the investigation began after the team received specific information about a young man allegedly moving around the Power House Bank Colony area. Acting on the information, a police team comprising Sub-Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, Gaurav, Aman, Harkesh and Kuldeep was constituted.
The team reached the location and detained the suspect for questioning. Police identified the accused as Birju alias Sunil, a resident of Labour Chowk in Uttam Nagar, Delhi.
According to police, questioning of the accused led to the disclosure of his alleged involvement in two incidents in which women were targeted and jewellery was taken from them. Investigators are now examining the circumstances of both cases and are also questioning the accused about his possible involvement in other offences.
Police said the first incident was reported on July 16. According to the investigation, a woman from Vishwakarma Mohalla was allegedly lured into a conversation by the accused, after which her gold and silver jewellery was allegedly taken and the accused fled from the spot.
A second incident allegedly occurred on July 25 near the railway station. Police said a woman who was walking near the railway station was allegedly approached and deceived. During the incident, a pair of gold earrings and a gold ring were allegedly taken from her before the accused fled.
Both cases had already been registered at the respective police stations, according to the police. Following the arrest, investigators are now examining the evidence and circumstances surrounding the two incidents to establish the exact role of the accused.
Police officials said the accused was produced before the court and taken on remand so that investigators could question him further. The remand is expected to help police establish whether the accused acted alone or had assistance from others and whether he was involved in additional incidents in the district or elsewhere.
Raman Chandel said the investigation would also focus on identifying the full extent of the accused’s criminal activities. Police will examine whether any other cases have been registered against him and whether his name has surfaced in similar incidents.
The police action comes amid continued efforts by Yamunanagar Police to strengthen the investigation of property-related crimes and identify suspects involved in targeting vulnerable victims. Officials said information received during investigations is being verified before further legal action is taken.
The alleged method of targeting women by gaining their confidence and subsequently taking away jewellery has also prompted investigators to examine the circumstances in which the victims were approached. Police are likely to verify statements, available evidence and other relevant information as part of the investigation.
Officials said the arrest would be followed by further investigation to determine whether jewellery allegedly taken during the incidents can be recovered. The police team is also expected to establish the sequence of events in both cases and identify any additional persons who may have been involved.
The accused’s police remand will allow investigators to question him regarding the alleged offences and gather information that may assist in the investigation. Police said the number of cases, if any, registered against the accused would become clearer during the remand proceedings and verification of police records.
The Anti-Burglary Staff and Anti-Narcotic Cell-II teams have been working as part of the district police’s broader campaign against crime. Officers have been directed to act on credible information and take legal action against suspects involved in criminal activities.
Police officials reiterated that investigations would be conducted on the basis of evidence and established legal procedures. Further action in the two cases will depend on the evidence collected during the investigation and the findings emerging from the accused’s questioning.
The police have also appealed to residents to remain cautious when approached by unknown persons and to immediately inform the authorities if they encounter suspicious activity. Officials said timely reporting can assist investigators in tracing suspects and preventing similar incidents.
The arrest represents a significant development in the investigation of the two jewellery-related cases, although police said the probe remains ongoing. Investigators are continuing to establish the complete sequence of events and determine whether the accused has links to other cases.
Raman Chandel said the police would continue to examine the accused’s background and criminal record during the investigation. Any additional cases found to be connected with the accused will be investigated separately and appropriate legal action will be taken according to the evidence.
Police said the accused will remain subject to the legal process as the investigation progresses. The court proceedings and further police investigation will determine the next course of action in the cases.
The Yamunanagar Police’s latest action also underlines its focus on using specialised teams to investigate cases involving theft, deception and other property-related offences. With the accused now in police remand, investigators are expected to focus on recovering the allegedly stolen jewellery, establishing the accused’s wider criminal network, if any, and determining whether similar incidents were carried out elsewhere.
The investigation into both incidents is currently underway.
