The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday staged a protest in the Jagadhri area of Yamunanagar over the poor condition of a road near Spring Dale School, deep potholes and waterlogging following rainfall. Party leaders and workers gathered on the road to highlight what they described as persistent civic problems and demanded immediate repair of the damaged stretch along with a permanent solution to the drainage issue.
During the protest, party workers also placed a BJP flag in a large pothole on the road as a symbolic expression of their opposition to the condition of the stretch. The demonstration focused on the difficulties faced by students, parents, residents and daily commuters using the road.
AAP Yamunanagar district president Rahul Bhan said the road where the protest was held serves two educational institutions — Spring Dale School and Bhagwan Parshuram School. A large number of students, parents and local residents use the route every day, making the condition of the road a matter of public safety.
Bhan said the deep potholes on the road were creating difficulties for motorists and two-wheeler riders. He claimed that people had fallen and sustained injuries while travelling on the damaged stretch. According to him, the condition of the road becomes particularly problematic during the rainy season when accumulated water covers the potholes and makes them difficult for commuters to identify.
He said the road deteriorates soon after the stretch is approached from Vyas Pur Road. During rainfall, water reportedly accumulates on the road to a depth of nearly two feet at some locations. Once the potholes are submerged, drivers and riders are unable to judge their depth and location, increasing the possibility of accidents.
The AAP leader demanded that the administration take immediate steps to repair the damaged road and ensure proper drainage so that rainwater does not remain accumulated on the carriageway.
Bhan said the issue should not be viewed merely as a road maintenance problem because the stretch is used extensively by schoolchildren and their families. He argued that roads leading to educational institutions require particular attention because students often travel through them during peak hours.
The protest also brought attention to the condition of electricity infrastructure along the road. Party workers pointed towards electricity poles and wires hanging from them and expressed concern over the potential danger posed by exposed or improperly secured electrical wiring, particularly when the road is waterlogged.
AAP leader Chirag Singhal said the situation required immediate attention because waterlogging and unsafe electrical wires could together create a serious safety risk. He said authorities should ensure that electrical wires and related infrastructure are properly secured and that there is no possibility of contact with standing rainwater.
Singhal also questioned the lack of action despite political representatives from different parties being associated with the area. He pointed out that Jagadhri Municipal Corporation Mayor Suman Bahmani is from the BJP, while Jagadhri MLA Akram Khan belongs to the Congress. He alleged that despite the presence of elected representatives, the road problem had remained unresolved.
According to Singhal, the continued deterioration of the road has a direct impact on local residents and children travelling to schools. He said civic infrastructure should not become a political issue at the cost of public safety and that elected representatives and the administration should work together to address basic problems affecting residents.
The AAP leaders said the condition of the road had become particularly concerning because rainfall regularly resulted in water accumulating over the damaged surface. They maintained that patchwork repairs alone may not be sufficient and called for proper assessment of the road as well as improvement of the drainage system.
The party also demanded that the authorities inspect the electricity poles and wires along the affected stretch and take corrective measures wherever necessary. The protesters said public safety should remain the priority while carrying out road and civic infrastructure work.
The demonstration was aimed at drawing the attention of the administration towards problems that residents have been facing while using the road. Party workers raised their concerns over potholes, waterlogging and electrical safety and urged the authorities to take concrete action rather than allowing the problems to continue.
Bhan said the administration should ensure that the road is repaired without further delay. He also called for a permanent drainage solution so that rainwater can be removed quickly after rainfall.
The party argued that better road infrastructure is essential for the smooth movement of residents and students. A damaged road near schools, they said, can create additional risks during school opening and closing hours when traffic and pedestrian movement increase.
The AAP leaders further said that civic authorities should conduct regular inspections of roads in areas witnessing heavy public movement. They maintained that timely maintenance could prevent potholes from becoming deeper and help reduce the cost and scale of future repairs.
The protesters also emphasised the need for coordination between civic agencies responsible for roads, drainage and electricity infrastructure. According to the party, addressing one problem while ignoring another could leave residents exposed to continuing risks.
The AAP said that if the administration failed to initiate action soon, the party would intensify its agitation. The leaders urged the authorities to treat the demands as a matter of public safety and provide a clear and effective solution.
The protest concluded with demands for immediate road repairs, improved water drainage and safety measures for electricity wires along the affected stretch. The party said it would continue to raise issues concerning basic civic amenities and the safety of residents in Jagadhri.
The demonstration has once again brought the condition of local roads and drainage infrastructure into focus, particularly in areas used by schoolchildren and residents on a daily basis. The protesters maintained that safe roads, effective drainage and secure electrical infrastructure are essential public services and should receive timely attention from the concerned authorities.
