Sirsa MP, former Union minister, Congress general secretary and CWC member Kumari Selja has questioned the economic policies of the BJP-led Central government, alleging that recent decisions could place an additional burden on small traders, self-employed people and young people trying to build livelihoods. She said the government should review such measures in the public interest and clearly explain which sections are expected to benefit from them.
Selja also referred to Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s earlier criticism of the policy, saying the government should reconsider what she described as an anti-people step. Her remarks were framed around the concerns of small businesses, informal self-employment and household incomes.
Selja raises concerns over burden on small businesses
Selja said small shopkeepers, self-employed youth and people earning family incomes through small-scale work often operate with limited financial margins. In her view, policies introduced in the name of encouraging business can still increase their costs when accompanied by new rules, conditions or compliance requirements.
She questioned what she called the government’s mixed messaging, asking why relief for one category should be presented alongside rules that may make day-to-day business more difficult for others. She sought greater clarity on the government’s actual policy direction and on the classes of citizens that would receive measurable benefits from the decisions.

Economic debate should reflect household conditions, Selja says
Selja argued that headline economic indicators alone do not capture the full experience of households and local markets. She said the condition of the economy is also visible through changes in people’s incomes, expenses, employment opportunities and purchasing power.
She linked her concerns to inflation, unemployment and the wider financial pressures faced by poor and middle-class households. According to Selja, a stronger economy should translate into better opportunities for ordinary citizens as well as businesses operating at the local level.

Selja says small business support should remain a policy priority
Selja said the Congress position is that small businesses, self-employed workers and young people should receive protection and encouragement because these groups contribute to local employment and household incomes. She called for policy measures that help smaller enterprises remain viable rather than adding avoidable financial pressure.
She also criticised what she described as the influence of external pressures on economic decision-making and said policy choices should strengthen India’s economic self-reliance. These comments are political assertions by Selja and represent her assessment of the government’s economic approach.

Calling for greater attention to the concerns of ordinary traders and households, Selja urged the Central government to review the measures under discussion and respond to public concerns.
