Experts guide students on protecting innovation, maintaining ethics in research and exploring new professional opportunities in the field of Chartered Accountancy

DAV Girls College, Yamunanagar, organised two extension lectures aimed at providing students with greater exposure to research, innovation and professional career opportunities beyond the traditional classroom environment. The programmes were organised by the college’s Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), Research and Development Cell and Department of Commerce, with experts sharing valuable insights on Intellectual Property Rights, research publication ethics and career prospects in the field of Chartered Accountancy.
The initiative was designed to help students understand the importance of innovation and research in higher education while also making them aware of professional opportunities available in emerging and established career fields. The sessions brought together academic experts and professionals, who encouraged students to develop practical knowledge, strengthen their skills and make informed decisions about their future careers.
One of the extension lectures was organised jointly by the Institution’s Innovation Council and the Research and Development Cell on the subject of “Patents, Copyright, Trademarks and Research Publication Ethics.” Prof. Neera Raghav, Director and Professor at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Kurukshetra University, was the keynote speaker.
The programme was chaired by Dr. Sunita Kaushik, Coordinator of the Research and Development Cell, and Vivek, Convener of the Institution’s Innovation Council. During the session, Prof. Neera Raghav explained the significance of Intellectual Property Rights in protecting original ideas, research and innovations.
She clearly explained the differences between patents, copyrights and trademarks and discussed the role each form of intellectual property protection plays in safeguarding intellectual and creative work. She informed students that research and innovation require not only creativity and knowledge but also an understanding of how original work can be legally protected and recognised.
Prof. Raghav also provided information about the step-by-step process involved in filing a patent. She explained the importance of identifying an innovative idea, preparing the necessary documentation and following the prescribed procedure for securing legal protection. The session helped students understand how intellectual property can play an important role in promoting innovation and encouraging researchers and innovators to develop new ideas.
A significant part of the lecture focused on ethics in research publication. Prof. Raghav highlighted the importance of originality, proper referencing, credibility and intellectual honesty in academic and scientific research. She emphasised that researchers must maintain ethical standards while preparing research papers and publications and should ensure that their work is based on genuine research and properly acknowledged sources.
The students were also made aware of the importance of avoiding unethical practices in research and maintaining transparency and authenticity in academic work. The session encouraged young researchers to understand that academic success is closely linked with integrity and responsible conduct.
The second extension lecture focused on “New Opportunities in Becoming a Chartered Accountant” and was organised jointly by the Department of Commerce and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. The programme provided students with detailed information about the Chartered Accountancy profession, the examination process, training requirements and the wide range of career opportunities available in the field.
CA Rajat Alagh, Chairman of the Northern India Regional Council, CA Madhusudan, Vice Chairman, career counsellor CA Urja Kumar and CM Sumit Chaddha were the key speakers at the programme. The session was chaired by Dr. Meenakshi Saini, Head of the Department of Commerce.
Addressing the students, CA Rajat Alagh said that success in the field of Chartered Accountancy requires a clear vision, determination and consistent hard work. He encouraged students to set well-defined goals and remain focused on their professional ambitions. He said that students who approach their preparation with discipline and dedication can successfully overcome the challenges associated with professional examinations.
Career counsellor CA Urja Kumar provided detailed information about the examination process and the different stages involved in pursuing Chartered Accountancy. She also discussed the training component of the professional journey and guided students about the preparation required at different levels.
Her interaction helped students gain a clearer understanding of the pathway towards becoming a Chartered Accountant. She encouraged them to plan their academic journey carefully and remain committed to continuous learning and professional development.
CM Sumit Chaddha highlighted the diverse career opportunities available to Chartered Accountants in the fields of business, employment and professional services. He said that a qualification in Chartered Accountancy can open opportunities in several areas, including finance, taxation, auditing, accounting, consultancy and corporate services.
He encouraged students to look at the CA profession not only as an academic qualification but also as a platform for developing professional expertise and exploring diverse career paths. According to him, the changing economic and business environment continues to create new opportunities for skilled financial professionals.
CA Madhusudan described Chartered Accountancy as a challenging yet highly rewarding profession. He said that the field demands patience, determination and consistent effort, but students with proper guidance and a strong willingness to succeed can build rewarding careers.
He advised students not to be discouraged by the demanding nature of professional examinations and instead focus on developing a disciplined approach towards learning. Strong conceptual knowledge, regular practice and the ability to remain focused on long-term goals, he said, are essential for achieving success.
Through the two extension lectures, DAV Girls College provided students with exposure to both academic research and professional career development. While the first session focused on protecting innovation and maintaining ethical standards in research, the second session introduced students to the professional opportunities and career pathways available through Chartered Accountancy.
The programmes also reflected the importance of connecting classroom education with practical knowledge and professional guidance. In an increasingly competitive academic and employment environment, students need to understand emerging opportunities, develop relevant skills and remain aware of the changing requirements of higher education and professional sectors.
