630 students participate in competition aimed at strengthening knowledge of traffic regulations, safe driving practices and responsible road behaviour

With the objective of increasing awareness about road safety and traffic regulations among young women, the Road Safety Club of DAV Girls College, Yamunanagar organised a quiz competition based on traffic rules. As many as 630 students participated in the competition, which sought to educate students about safe road practices and encourage them to adopt responsible behaviour while travelling.
The programme was presided over by the college’s acting principal, Dr Surinder Kaur, Road Safety Club nodal officer Dr Parmesh Kumar, and convenor Priya. The organisers said the initiative was designed to make students more familiar with traffic regulations and highlight the importance of following road safety norms in everyday life.
The quiz questions were prepared on the basis of traffic rules and related educational material provided by the Superintendent of Police. The questions covered a range of subjects, including traffic signs, road safety regulations, the use of helmets and seat belts, precautions that motorists and other road users should take while travelling, and measures for ensuring safe movement on roads.
The participation of 630 students reflected considerable interest among students in understanding traffic regulations and road safety. The organisers said that educational activities such as quizzes can provide students with an opportunity to learn important safety rules in an engaging manner while encouraging them to think about their responsibilities as road users.
Addressing the students, Dr Surinder Kaur said creating awareness about road safety was an important requirement in the present circumstances. She noted that the police administration regularly conducts awareness campaigns to educate students about traffic regulations and safe road practices.
She stressed that compliance with traffic rules should not be viewed merely as a way to avoid traffic challans or legal penalties. Instead, she said, traffic regulations are intended to protect human life and reduce the possibility of accidents. Every road user, therefore, has a responsibility to follow the prescribed rules and contribute to a safer environment for others.
Dr Surinder Kaur encouraged students to develop a responsible attitude towards road use and to share safety-related information with their families and friends. She said young people can play an important role in creating awareness because responsible road behaviour adopted at an early stage can become a lifelong habit.
Dr Parmesh Kumar said disregard for traffic regulations contributes to a large number of road accidents every year and results in the loss of precious lives. He said road safety requires consistent awareness as well as responsible conduct by drivers, pedestrians and other road users.
He identified excessive speed, failure to wear helmets and seat belts, and ignoring traffic signals among the major factors associated with road accidents. He said even a moment of carelessness on the road can have serious consequences not only for the person violating the rules but also for other innocent road users.
Dr Parmesh Kumar called upon students to maintain discipline while using roads and strictly follow traffic regulations. He also urged them to encourage their family members and others around them to adopt safe road practices.
He said road safety awareness should extend beyond educational institutions and become part of everyday life. Students who understand the consequences of unsafe driving and careless road behaviour can help spread the message of responsible road use within their families and communities.
The quiz competition also provided an opportunity for students to revise their understanding of basic traffic signs and safety measures. The organisers said knowledge of road signs is particularly important because these signs communicate instructions, warnings and information to drivers and pedestrians and help regulate movement on roads.
The use of helmets and seat belts was also highlighted as an important component of road safety. Students were encouraged to understand that such protective measures are meant to reduce the severity of injuries in the event of an accident and should be used consistently rather than only when enforcement personnel are present.
The organisers further stressed the importance of avoiding distractions while travelling. Following traffic signals, maintaining appropriate speed and remaining attentive to road conditions are essential components of safe road behaviour.
Road Safety Club convenor Priya said every student should have adequate knowledge of traffic rules and understand how to respond responsibly while using public roads. She said a minor act of negligence can sometimes lead to a serious accident, making awareness and caution essential for every road user.
Priya said educational institutions have an important role in promoting road safety because students are not only current road users but will also become drivers, professionals and responsible citizens in the future. Building awareness among young people can therefore have a long-term impact on road safety.
She said students should not limit their understanding of traffic regulations to the rules discussed during the competition. Instead, they should put the principles of safe road use into practice in their daily lives.
The event also sought to reinforce the idea that road safety is a shared responsibility. While traffic police and government agencies have an important role in enforcement and awareness, individuals must also contribute by following rules and encouraging others to do the same.
The organisers said awareness programmes conducted in educational institutions can help students understand the real-life importance of traffic regulations. Such initiatives can also create a culture in which road safety is viewed as a matter of personal and public responsibility rather than simply an enforcement issue.
The participation of a large number of students demonstrated the relevance of road safety education among young people. The college said it would continue to encourage activities that promote awareness about issues affecting students and the wider community.
The programme concluded with an emphasis on responsible road behaviour, adherence to traffic regulations and greater awareness of safety measures. Students were encouraged to become ambassadors of road safety and help spread awareness among their peers, family members and members of the community.
