YAMUNANAGAR: The statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at the city’s prominent Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk, which had remained covered for a prolonged period during the renovation of the crossing, was uncovered late Wednesday night by a group of youngsters. After removing the covering, the youths raised slogans of “Jai Hind, Jai Bharat”. A video of the incident has also been circulating on social media.

The development has once again brought attention to the unfinished and delayed aspects of the chowk renovation project. The youngsters said they decided to remove the cover themselves because the statue had remained hidden for a long period and the process of installing the proposed replacement statue had not moved ahead as expected. Their action has brought the existing statue back into public view while questions continue over when the renovation work and installation of the new statue will finally be completed.

The Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk, also known as the old Fountain Chowk, is an important location in Yamunanagar city. The municipal corporation had undertaken its redevelopment with an estimated expenditure of about ₹15.65 lakh. Earlier project plans envisaged a circular chowk spread over a perimeter of around seven metres, with a statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh at the centre, granite below the statue, a stone canopy above it, transparent glass around the structure and decorative LED lighting.

Why the statue remained covered

The covering of the statue was linked to concerns raised during inspection of the renovation work. The statue installed at the site was reported to be around 5 feet 11 inches high, while the project requirement was for a statue of approximately 6.5 feet. Following the issue, the municipal authorities sought corrective action from the contractor and directed that a new statue conforming to the specified height be installed.

The difference in the specified and installed height became one of the major points of discussion surrounding the project. As the replacement statue was awaited, the existing statue remained covered. The prolonged delay meant that the figure of one of India’s most remembered revolutionary freedom fighters was not visible to people passing through the busy crossing.

The youngsters who removed the cover said their intention was to restore the statue’s visibility rather than allow it to remain hidden indefinitely. Their action, however, does not change the municipal requirement regarding the proposed replacement. The civic body will still have to take a decision on the existing structure and complete the approved work according to the project specifications.

Renovation cost and design remain in focus

The chowk redevelopment was planned as a major visual improvement to a prominent city junction. Project documents and earlier reports described the use of red sandstone and granite, along with transparent glass panels, a stone canopy and decorative lighting. The circular design was intended to provide a more defined setting for the statue and give the crossing a renewed appearance.

However, the project has faced questions not only over the statue but also over the condition of some of the stonework. Reports have noted fading or change in the appearance of portions of the red sandstone used around the chowk. Such observations have led to questions among local residents about the quality and durability of the material used in the redevelopment.

The civic authorities had earlier indicated that corrective measures would be required where the work did not conform to the prescribed specifications. The contractor was also asked to address the shortcomings. The issue of the statue’s height is particularly significant because the memorial is intended to represent Shaheed Bhagat Singh at a prominent public location and therefore its design and dimensions are part of the approved project specifications.

Public attention returns to the memorial

With the covering now removed, the statue has once again become visible to commuters and residents. The incident has also renewed public discussion about the pace of work at the chowk and the need for clarity regarding the replacement statue. For many residents, the issue is not simply about construction activity but also about ensuring that a memorial associated with a national freedom icon is maintained with dignity and completed in accordance with the approved design.

The redevelopment was originally presented as an effort to give the busy crossing a cleaner and more attractive identity.
