Madhu Petrol Pump proprietor Tyagi says modern fuel stations must go beyond selling fuel by promoting public welfare, road safety, environmental conservation and community service

In an era where road travel has become an integral part of daily life, a petrol pump is no longer just a commercial establishment selling fuel but an essential public service centre dedicated to the safety, comfort and well-being of travellers, says noted environmentalist, social worker and Madhu Petrol Pump proprietor Randev Tyagi.
Sharing his vision of what an ideal fuel station should represent, Tyagi said a petrol pump today performs a role that extends far beyond dispensing petrol and diesel. It serves as a dependable stop for motorists, offering emergency assistance, basic facilities and a reassuring sense of security during every journey.
According to him, in earlier times, travellers depended on inns, wells and rest houses for support during long journeys. In the modern age, petrol pumps have naturally evolved into those dependable service points where people expect not only quality fuel but also essential amenities and timely assistance whenever required.
Tyagi pointed out that customers visiting a petrol station benefit from several facilities that often go unnoticed. These include clean drinking water, hygienic washrooms, free tyre air, first-aid services, guidance for travellers, assistance during vehicle-related emergencies and uninterrupted services throughout the day and night. These facilities, he said, transform a petrol pump into a centre of public convenience and social responsibility.
“Whenever a traveller notices a petrol pump on a highway or city road, it creates an immediate sense of confidence. People know they can receive help, guidance and basic facilities whenever needed. That trust is our greatest responsibility,” Tyagi said.
He further explained that although petrol pumps function on regulated and comparatively limited margins, customer satisfaction always remains the foremost priority. Regardless of extreme summer heat, heavy monsoon rains or freezing winter mornings, fuel station employees continue to perform their duties with commitment, professionalism and a welcoming attitude.
“Every member of the staff understands that serving people is not merely a job but a responsibility towards society. A smile, timely assistance and courteous behaviour often become as valuable as the fuel itself,” he added.
Apart from managing the fuel station, Tyagi has been actively associated with environmental conservation, plantation drives and public awareness campaigns for several years. He believes industrial growth and environmental protection should complement each other rather than exist in conflict.
Drawing a comparison between fuel and nature, Tyagi said that while fuel powers vehicles, trees sustain human life by providing clean air, maintaining ecological balance and protecting future generations from the growing impact of climate change.
“Development cannot be meaningful unless it is environmentally responsible. Every business establishment, including petrol pumps, should contribute to making society greener by encouraging tree plantation, water conservation and sustainable practices,” he observed.
Through various social initiatives, Tyagi has consistently encouraged citizens to participate in plantation campaigns, environmental awareness programmes and community welfare activities. He believes that businesses must actively support society beyond their commercial responsibilities.
He also emphasised the importance of road safety and responsible driving. According to him, petrol pumps are often the first point where motorists can receive guidance regarding safe travel, vehicle maintenance and emergency support. He believes such public-oriented services strengthen trust between citizens and service providers.
Tyagi concluded by saying that an ideal petrol pump should stand for integrity, compassion and service rather than business alone.
“For us, every customer is a guest and every journey matters. Our success is not measured only by the fuel we sell but by the confidence, safety and satisfaction with which every traveller leaves our premises. Service to people is the greatest achievement, and protecting the environment is our responsibility towards future generations.”
He added that as India moves towards rapid infrastructure growth and increased mobility, petrol pumps must continue evolving into community-oriented service centres that combine efficiency with humanity, environmental awareness and public trust.
