SP Kamaldeep Goyal urges citizens to stay alert against cyber fraud as festive shopping and digital payments increase

Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant against online fraud, warning that cyber criminals are using increasingly deceptive methods to target people through digital payments, online shopping and social media.
Police Appeal for Immediate Reporting
Police said anyone who becomes a victim of cyber fraud should report the matter without delay through the national cybercrime helpline 1930. Complaints can also be registered through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. Haryana Police describes 1930 as its Cyber Crime Helpline for quick reporting of financial cyber fraud and other cybercrime incidents.
Festive Offers May Be Used to Mislead Users
According to the police advisory, the growing use of online shopping, digital banking and UPI payments has also given fraudsters more opportunities to approach potential victims. During the festive season, people may receive messages promising bumper discounts, attractive offers, lotteries or prizes. Police have advised citizens not to act in haste or click on suspicious links merely because an offer appears financially attractive.
Do Not Share Sensitive Banking Information
Citizens have been advised not to share bank account details, ATM information, CVV numbers, OTPs, UPI PINs or passwords with unknown callers or through unverified links. Police also advised people to remember that banks and authorised institutions do not ordinarily ask customers to disclose such confidential financial credentials over unsolicited telephone calls.
Use Trusted Websites and Applications
While shopping online, people should use established and secure websites or official applications. Unfamiliar websites offering unusually steep discounts should be treated with caution. Users should verify the website or application before entering payment information or personal details.
Why Speed Matters After a Fraud
SP Kamaldeep Goyal stressed that the initial period after a financial cyber fraud can be crucial. Prompt reporting through 1930 can support efforts to stop or secure the disputed funds, depending on the circumstances and the stage at which the transaction is reported. Citizens should preserve relevant messages, transaction details and other evidence and provide them to the authorities when making a complaint.
Young People Urged to Help Families Stay Safe
The police also appealed to young people to help elderly family members and others in their neighbourhoods understand basic cyber-safety precautions. Awareness of common fraud techniques can reduce the chances of people sharing confidential information or transferring money under pressure.
