The Municipal Corporation of Yamunanagar intensified its ‘Swachhta Se Swagat Abhiyan’ on Saturday by launching a public awareness campaign outside Nehru Park in Model Town, urging residents to eliminate single-use plastic and adopt environmentally friendly alternatives.

The campaign was led by Mayor Suman Bahmani, who, along with BJP workers, Ward Councillor Vibhor Pahuja and municipal officials, interacted with shopkeepers, street vendors and passers-by to spread awareness about the harmful impact of plastic pollution.

A giant “Plastic Monster” installation was used as a symbolic display to highlight the long-term environmental and health hazards associated with single-use plastic. Organisers explained that continued dependence on disposable plastic could eventually create serious health and environmental challenges for every household.

As part of the initiative, jute bags were distributed among residents and traders to encourage the use of reusable and eco-friendly alternatives in place of plastic carry bags.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Suman Bahmani said cleanliness should become a way of life rather than being treated as a one-day campaign.

“Every citizen has a responsibility to abandon single-use plastic and adopt cloth or jute bags. A truly clean and beautiful city can only be built when people actively participate in maintaining cleanliness,” she said.

She also appealed to shopkeepers, street vendors and business establishments to keep their surroundings clean and avoid littering public places. The Mayor warned that the Municipal Corporation would continue to take action, including issuing challans, against those found violating cleanliness norms or using prohibited plastic items. The civic body reiterated that public participation remains the key to achieving a cleaner, greener and plastic-free Yamunanagar under its ongoing sanitation campaign.
