Placement Cell initiative focuses on industry-oriented resume writing, professional presentation and employability skills

The Placement Cell of Maharaja Agrasen College, Jagadhri, organised an informative and practical resume writing session to help students prepare professional resumes aligned with industry expectations and the requirements of prospective employers. The initiative was aimed at strengthening students’ career preparedness while equipping them with practical skills needed to present their academic qualifications, abilities and achievements effectively in the competitive job market.
The session was conducted with a focus on helping students understand that a resume is not merely a record of educational qualifications but an important professional document that creates an initial impression on a prospective employer. Students were guided on how a well-structured and carefully prepared resume can effectively communicate their strengths, skills, experience and suitability for a particular position.
The main speaker at the session was Gaurav Bareja, Coordinator of the Placement Cell, who provided students with detailed guidance on various important aspects of professional resume writing. He explained the significance of selecting an appropriate resume format according to an individual’s academic background, skills and career objectives. He also discussed ways of presenting educational qualifications in a clear and effective manner so that relevant information can be easily noticed by recruiters.
Students Guided on Effective Resume Writing
Bareja emphasised the importance of highlighting achievements and experiences appropriately rather than simply listing qualifications. He explained that students should identify their strengths and present them in a manner that demonstrates their potential value to an organisation. Practical guidance was also provided on organising information, maintaining clarity and avoiding unnecessary details that could make a resume less effective.
A major focus of the session was on common mistakes made while preparing resumes. Students were advised to pay attention to accuracy, presentation, relevance and consistency while drafting their professional profiles. The speaker explained that errors, poorly organised information and inappropriate formatting can weaken an otherwise strong application and may affect the first impression created before an interview.
The students were also made aware of the importance of tailoring a resume to the requirements of a particular job. Bareja explained that a single standard resume may not always be suitable for every employment opportunity. Instead, students should carefully study the job description and make relevant changes to their resumes so that their qualifications and skills correspond to the requirements of the position.
During the interactive session, students participated enthusiastically and raised a number of questions related to resume preparation, internships, skill development and career opportunities. The interaction enabled students to seek practical clarification on issues they are likely to encounter while applying for internships, placements and entry-level professional positions.
The students were told that employers often receive a large number of applications and that a concise, professionally presented and relevant resume can help an applicant stand out. They were encouraged to view resume preparation as part of their overall career development rather than as a formality required only when applying for a job.
The session also highlighted the wider importance of professional self-presentation. Students were encouraged to continuously improve their knowledge and skills and to develop the ability to communicate their capabilities with confidence. The organisers stressed that employability is influenced not only by academic performance but also by communication, professional behaviour, confidence, adaptability and the ability to understand workplace expectations.
College Principal Dr Karuna encouraged the students to make full use of such career-oriented initiatives and remain committed to continuous learning. She said that a strong academic foundation is important for professional growth, but academic qualifications alone are not sufficient to ensure career success. Effective communication skills, confidence, a positive attitude and the ability to present oneself professionally are equally important in building a successful career.
Dr Karuna urged students to keep developing their knowledge and skills in line with changing professional requirements. She encouraged them to remain proactive in identifying opportunities for internships, training programmes and skill development, while also preparing themselves to meet the expectations of employers. Her encouraging words helped boost students’ confidence and motivated them to take a more active approach towards their professional development.
The programme was supported by Dr Seema Gupta, Dr V.S. Dhillon, Randeep, Shalu and Sheetal, whose coordination and assistance contributed to the smooth conduct of the session.
