Voting Rights Are Central to Democracy, Says Selja

Sirsa MP, former Union Cabinet Minister and senior Congress leader Kumari Selja has said that the vote of every citizen is the greatest strength of a democracy and that safeguarding this right is a constitutional responsibility. She said the Congress, under the leadership of Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, is raising concerns about voting rights, electoral transparency and the protection of democratic values.

Selja said a rally scheduled for November 1 at Delhi’s historic Ramlila Maidan is expected to draw large numbers of people from Haryana, Uttarakhand and other parts of the country. She described the mobilisation as an effort to bring issues related to the electoral process and citizens’ democratic rights into the national discussion.

Congress Raises Questions Over Electoral Transparency

Criticising the BJP, Selja alleged that its policies were contrary to democratic traditions and claimed that the government was uncomfortable with questions from the opposition. She said a healthy democracy requires the ruling party to face scrutiny and the opposition to have the freedom to question government decisions, oppose policies and raise matters affecting the public.

She also said that reactions from BJP leaders to the proposed Congress rally reflected, in her view, discomfort with the issues being raised. These remarks represent Selja’s political assessment of the situation.

Calls for Clear Answers on Alleged Vote Theft

Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s questions about the fairness of elections and alleged vote theft, Selja said the concerns should receive impartial and transparent answers. She argued that public confidence in the electoral system is essential for democratic institutions to function effectively and for citizens to trust the outcome of elections.

Selja said the Congress’s stated objective was not to target any individual but to defend constitutional safeguards, the independence of democratic institutions and every citizen’s right to vote. The allegations about electoral irregularities remain political claims and should be assessed on the basis of evidence and appropriate scrutiny.

Unemployment, Inflation and Farmers’ Issues Also Raised

Selja accused the BJP of pursuing divisive politics and said the government should focus on issues that directly affect people’s lives. She cited unemployment, inflation, farmers’ problems and the impartial functioning of democratic institutions among the matters that, in her view, require attention and answers.

She said the November 1 gathering would put electoral transparency, the protection of voters’ rights and the democratic role of the opposition before a national audience. Selja expressed confidence that participation from Haryana, Uttarakhand and elsewhere would send a message about public awareness of constitutional rights.

Ramlila Maidan Rally to Highlight Constitutional Values

Selja said the Congress remained committed to protecting rights guaranteed by the Constitution and preserving the independence of democratic institutions. She expressed hope that the rally would strengthen the public discussion around voting rights, electoral transparency and accountability in a democracy.

The rally is scheduled for November 1 at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The expected turnout cited by Selja is an estimate, and the event’s participation will become clear when the gathering takes place.
