Former Congress MLA Raj Pal Bhukri, a prominent Dalit leader from Haryana’s Yamunanagar district and a former legislator from the Sadhaura (Reserved) Assembly constituency, passed away on Monday morning after reportedly suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. He was 55.According to family members, Bhukri complained of severe chest pain at his residence early in the morning. His condition deteriorated rapidly, and despite efforts to provide medical assistance, he could not be saved.  His untimely demise has sent shockwaves through political and social circles across the district, with leaders from different walks of life expressing grief over the loss of a veteran public representative. A close associate of senior Congress leader Kumari Selja, Bhukri remained actively associated with the Congress for several decades and was regarded as one of the party’s prominent Dalit faces in the region.  Born on May 19, 1971, in Bhukri village—then part of the erstwhile Ambala district and now in Yamunanagar—he built his political career through sustained grassroots engagement and public outreach.  Bhukri entered the Haryana Legislative Assembly after winning the 2009 Assembly election from the Sadhaura (SC Reserved) constituency, securing 47,263 votes. During his tenure as MLA, he consistently raised issues concerning farmers’ welfare, irrigation facilities, road infrastructure, electricity supply, education and regional development, earning recognition for his active participation in public affairs. Throughout his political journey, he remained closely connected with the people of Sadhaura and was widely appreciated for maintaining regular contact with constituents and taking up local development issues. Following changes in the party’s electoral strategy in subsequent elections, Bhukri continued to remain politically active and associated with organisational activities, maintaining his presence in public life and continuing to work among the people.  Leaders, party workers and supporters have described his demise as a significant loss for the Congress and for public life in Yamunanagar. Tributes have been pouring in, remembering him as a humble leader who remained committed to public service throughout his political career.
