Yamunanagar’s ₹11.84-Crore Storm Water Drainage Project Nears Completion
Railway pipe installation near Gulab Nagar remains the final major hurdle; officials assure completion by December-end, raising hopes of relief for waterlogging-prone colonies

Yamunanagar’s storm water drainage project, aimed at preventing waterlogging by channelising rainwater coming from the Jagadhri side, is expected to be completed soon. The Railway Department is carrying out the remaining work of laying pipes beneath the railway line.

Mayor Suman Bahmani inspected the ongoing construction near Gulab Nagar on Tuesday and reviewed the progress with railway officials. She sought details about the work and directed the officials to speed up the pipe installation. Railway officials assured her that the work would be completed by the end of December.

The mayor said providing relief to residents from waterlogging during the rainy season was among the Municipal Corporation’s priorities. She said completion of the storm water drainage project would benefit dozens of colonies and instructed officials to maintain construction quality while accelerating the work.

Councillors Vibhor Pahuja, Sandeep Dhiman and Dixit, along with railway and Municipal Corporation officials, were present during the inspection. The mayor examined the pipe-laying work beneath the railway line and discussed the completion timeline with the concerned officials.

Railway Work Had Delayed the Project

Around 95 per cent of the project work had already been completed by the Municipal Corporation. Initially, a dispute related to private land had affected progress. After the issue was resolved, the remaining work involved laying pipes beneath railway lines near the bypass.

As per the required procedure, the Railway Department had to carry out the pipe installation beneath its tracks. The Municipal Corporation had deposited the required amount as demanded by the railway authorities.

The Railway Department began the work a few months ago, and it is currently under construction. Meanwhile, it was also decided to connect the drain coming from the Jogindar Nagar side with the storm water drainage line.

₹11.84-Crore Project Launched in 2019

The project was launched under the AMRUT scheme to improve rainwater drainage in the city. MLA Ghanshyam Dass Arora laid the foundation stone for the ₹11.84-crore project on February 24, 2019.

Under the project, a pipeline measuring around 4.5 kilometres has been laid along the old National Highway. The system includes large pipes ranging from 900 mm to 1,800 mm in diameter.

Around 100 manholes have been constructed, while arrangements have been made to connect rainwater and wastewater from 196 locations to the drainage line.

According to the project plan, water from the major drain coming from the Jagadhri side will be diverted from Kanhaiya Sahib Chowk and carried to the ditch drain near Jammu Colony. The system is expected to improve drainage in low-lying parts of the city and reduce waterlogging.

Colonies Expected to Benefit

The project is expected to benefit Professor Colony, Model Town, Shakti Nagar, Tagore Garden, Sarojini Colony, Jaswant Colony, Shyam Nagar, Modern Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Vijay Colony, Chandpur, Jammu Colony, Camp Area, Krishna Colony, Hari Nagar, Vishnu Nagar and Bank Colony, among other areas.

During rainfall, water from these localities currently flows into major drains, sometimes causing them to overflow. This leads to waterlogging in nearby colonies.

Once the project is completed, smoother rainwater drainage is expected to reduce the recurring difficulties faced by residents during the monsoon.
