The demand for formal recognition of India’s freedom fighters as martyrs, along with calls for stronger action against corruption and greater political participation by young people, came into focus at a gathering organised by the Shaheed Udham Singh Kamboj Sabha in Yamunanagar.

Sardar Hardyal Singh Kamboj, the great-grandson of Shaheed Udham Singh, raised the demand while speaking to the media in the city. He said the families of freedom fighters continued to feel disappointed that governments had not granted the martyrs the formal recognition they believed was deserved.

Hardyal Singh Kamboj urged the Central Government to recognise revolutionary freedom fighters, including Shaheed Udham Singh and Shaheed Bhagat Singh, as martyrs in the manner sought by their supporters and families. He said their sacrifices for the country deserved recognition and that their ideals should continue to guide public policy and national life.

He also called for the governments at the Centre and in the states to work towards better healthcare, quality education and the country’s broader development. Referring to the aspirations associated with the freedom fighters, he said the welfare of ordinary citizens should remain a priority.

Call to Listen to Young People

Hardyal Singh Kamboj said the Central Government should take young people into confidence and listen carefully to their concerns and demands. He argued that the aspirations of the younger generation needed greater attention in public decision-making.

He also called for young people to be given more opportunities in elected and legislative institutions, including the Rajya Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies. Greater participation, he said, would help bring new perspectives into politics and allow younger citizens to contribute directly to governance.

Raising the issue of corruption, he called for strict action against those found involved in corrupt practices. He said accountability should be strengthened and that the authorities should take the issue seriously.

His remarks brought together three key themes: recognition of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, a stronger response to corruption and a greater role for young people in political institutions.

Representation and Recognition for the Kamboj Community

Jasmer Singh Kamboj, general secretary of the Shaheed Udham Singh Kamboj International Sabha, Sunam, also raised demands concerning the recognition of martyrs and political representation.

He said the Kamboj community should receive appropriate representation in politics. He reiterated the demand that freedom fighters should be granted formal recognition as martyrs and called for their life stories to be included in school and educational curricula.

Including the biographies and contributions of freedom fighters in the curriculum, he said, would help younger generations understand their sacrifices and learn about the values associated with the struggle for independence.

The speakers emphasised that remembering freedom fighters should extend beyond commemorative events. Their contributions, they argued, should be reflected in education, public awareness and the opportunities available to future generations.

Tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh

The gathering was organised by the Shaheed Udham Singh Kamboj Sabha in Yamunanagar to pay tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh. Participants offered their respects and called upon people to follow the ideals associated with the revolutionary freedom fighter.

A large number of people attended the programme. Those present included advocate Yashpal Rajedi, Naresh Kamboj Numberdar and retired Deputy Superintendent of Police Madan Lal Kamboj.

The event’s organisers and participants also included Jasmer Singh Kamboj and Birbal Kamboj. Paramjit Singh Handa, president of the organisation’s Uttarakhand unit, Ramsharan Nadda, Amar Kamboj from Rajasthan and Sachin Kamboj from Uttar Pradesh were among those named as attendees.

The gathering provided a platform for community representatives and supporters to remember Shaheed Udham Singh and discuss the recognition of freedom fighters, political representation and the role of young people in public life.

The demands voiced at the event were presented as appeals to the government and policymakers. The programme concluded with a call to remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and carry forward their ideals through education, public service and responsible participation in democratic institutions.
