SP Kamaldeep Goyal issues advisory as cyber fraudsters use social media, messaging apps and fake websites to lure investors with promises of high returns

The advisory highlights common crypto-related fraud methods, including fake investment platforms, cloud-mining schemes, Ponzi operations, pump-and-dump scams and phishing attempts.

YAMUNANAGAR: Yamunanagar Police have issued a special public advisory warning residents against cyber fraud carried out in the name of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency investments. Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal has urged people to conduct thorough verification before investing money through any cryptocurrency platform and to remain cautious of schemes promising unusually high or quick returns.

According to the police advisory, the growing popularity of digital currencies has also been exploited by cyber fraudsters who use social media platforms, Telegram, WhatsApp and fraudulent websites to approach potential investors. Victims are often attracted with claims of substantial profits and promises of becoming wealthy within a short period.

Fake investment platforms show false profits

Police said cyber criminals frequently operate through fake investment platforms and mobile applications. Victims may initially see apparently rising profits on the screen, creating the impression that their investment is generating substantial returns.

However, when an investor attempts to withdraw the money, the account may be blocked. Fraudsters may then demand additional payments in the name of taxes, processing charges, verification fees or other expenses before allowing the supposed investment amount or profit to be withdrawn.

Police have advised residents not to transfer additional money merely because an online platform displays profits or demands further payments for withdrawal.

Cloud mining schemes used to lure victims

The advisory also cautions against fraudulent cloud-mining offers. Cyber criminals may claim that users can earn large amounts from cryptocurrency mining without significant effort or technical involvement.

Such offers can be used to collect money from unsuspecting individuals by presenting unrealistic income projections and attractive investment packages. Police have urged people to verify the authenticity and credibility of any such service before transferring funds.

Ponzi and pump-and-dump schemes

Police have also warned residents about Ponzi-type investment schemes in which money collected from new participants is used to provide apparent returns to earlier investors.

Such schemes may continue to appear successful as long as new participants keep joining. When the flow of new investment stops, the arrangement can collapse, leaving later investors at risk of losing their money.

Another method highlighted in the advisory is the pump-and-dump scheme. In such cases, fraudsters may promote an inexpensive or little-known cryptocurrency through social media in an attempt to artificially increase interest and its apparent market value.

Members of the public may then be encouraged to invest after seeing promotional messages about the coin. Once enough people invest, the fraudsters may sell their holdings and disappear, leaving other investors exposed to losses.

Phishing links can compromise sensitive information

The police advisory also warns against phishing attempts involving fake links, websites and messages designed to resemble genuine cryptocurrency exchanges or digital-wallet services.

Fraudsters may send links or messages that ask users to enter passwords, wallet credentials or other sensitive information. Once such information is obtained, it can potentially be misused to access accounts or digital assets.

Police have specifically advised people not to share banking details, passwords, wallet credentials or other sensitive financial information with unknown persons and not to click on suspicious or unsolicited links.

Verify platforms before making any investment

The police have advised residents to check the credibility and registration details of a cryptocurrency platform before making an investment. Users have also been asked to carefully examine website URLs and avoid downloading applications from unknown or unverified sources.

The advisory stresses that attractive returns alone should not be treated as proof of a genuine investment opportunity. Residents should independently verify the platform and avoid making financial decisions based solely on messages received through social media or messaging applications.

Police have urged citizens to exercise particular caution when approached with investment opportunities that promise unusually high returns, guaranteed profits or rapid wealth.

Immediate reporting can help in cyber fraud cases

The police have emphasised that quick reporting is important in cases of cyber financial fraud. Anyone who becomes a victim of an online financial scam should immediately call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or register a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

The advisory also encourages residents to preserve relevant transaction details, messages, phone numbers, links and other available evidence when reporting a cybercrime. Such information can assist authorities in examining the circumstances of the fraud.

The Yamunanagar Police advisory is aimed at increasing public awareness about the changing methods used by cyber criminals. As digital financial services and cryptocurrency-related activity continue to attract public interest, police have urged residents to remain cautious, verify information independently and avoid transferring money or sharing sensitive details with unknown persons.
