Cleanliness Drive Takes Centre Stage in Yamunanagar as Councillors Asked to Mobilise Public Participation

YAMUNANAGAR: A detailed meeting was held at the Mayor House in Model Town on Wednesday to strengthen the cleanliness campaign across Yamunanagar-Jagadhri and ensure wider public participation under the state government’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. The meeting was chaired by Mayor Suman Bahmani and BJP district president Rajesh Sapra, with councillors representing all 22 wards of the Municipal Corporation in attendance.

The discussions focused on conducting special cleanliness drives in every ward and involving residents, social organisations and community groups in the campaign. The emphasis was on taking cleanliness activities beyond routine civic operations and encouraging citizens to participate directly in keeping their neighbourhoods clean.

Ward-level participation at the centre of campaign

Rajesh Sapra urged councillors to take the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan to residents at the grassroots level. He said the campaign should be used to promote cleanliness as a shared civic responsibility and called upon councillors to coordinate with social institutions, organisations and local residents in their respective wards.

He also stressed the need for sustained activity rather than one-day drives, with councillors expected to play an active role in mobilising residents and supporting cleanliness-related initiatives in their areas.

Mayor Suman Bahmani said keeping Yamunanagar-Jagadhri clean and attractive was a collective responsibility. She called upon councillors to act as cleanliness ambassadors in their wards, spread awareness among residents and encourage maximum public participation.

Bahmani also linked the cleanliness effort with the broader goal of building a developed India by 2047, saying that such a target requires cleanliness to become a people-led movement rather than remain limited to government programmes.

Plantation and environmental awareness also discussed

The meeting also placed emphasis on accelerating plantation activities alongside cleanliness work. Councillors were encouraged to plant more saplings in their respective wards and create awareness among residents about environmental protection.

The combined focus on cleanliness and plantation is intended to encourage residents to take greater ownership of their surroundings. The councillors were asked to work with local groups and citizens so that the campaign generates visible and sustained activity at the neighbourhood level.

The state government’s Seva Sankalp Abhiyan is being conducted from September 17 to October 17. The local campaign in Yamunanagar is aimed at strengthening public participation in civic and community-oriented activities during this period.

Development incentive proposed for top-performing wards

An important proposal discussed during the meeting was to provide development incentives to wards that perform particularly well in the cleanliness campaign. According to the plan presented at the meeting, the ward securing first position would receive ₹50 lakh for development works, while the second- and third-ranked wards would receive ₹25 lakh and ₹15 lakh, respectively.

The proposed incentive is intended to connect cleanliness performance with development activity and encourage councillors and residents to work collectively towards measurable improvements in their wards. The funds, as discussed, would be used for development works in the respective wards.

The mayor and the BJP district president appealed to all councillors to participate in the campaign with seriousness and determination. They stressed that improving civic cleanliness requires cooperation among the Municipal Corporation, elected representatives, community organisations and residents.

From civic campaign to public participation

The meeting underlined a broader approach in which ward-level cleanliness is linked with citizen awareness, environmental responsibility and local development. Councillors were asked to remain actively involved in their respective areas and encourage residents to contribute to cleanliness and plantation initiatives.

For Yamunanagar-Jagadhri, the effectiveness of the campaign will depend on how consistently ward-level activities are carried out and how widely residents participate. The meeting concluded with an appeal to councillors to work collectively towards making their wards cleaner, greener and better maintained.
