BKU-led ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’ submits memorandum to Prime Minister, warns of nationwide agitation if trade pact moves forward

Farmers under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) – Desh Bachao Morcha on Wednesday organised a motorcycle rally in Yamunanagar to protest against the proposed India–United States Free Trade Agreement (FTA), alleging that the deal would adversely affect Indian agriculture, rural livelihoods and small businesses. Hundreds of farmers riding motorcycles, tractors and other vehicles participated in the rally, which began near the Kail Solid Waste Management Plant and passed through various parts of the city before reaching the Mini Secretariat, where a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister was submitted through Deputy Commissioner Preeti.Traffic movement remained partially affected at several locations during the procession, prompting the deployment of traffic police to regulate vehicular movement and maintain law and order.A brief confrontation took place between farmers and police at the entrance to the Mini Secretariat after security personnel prevented tractors and motorcycles from entering the premises. DSP Rajeev Miglani cited security concerns while restricting vehicle entry.The farmers objected, arguing that official vehicles are routinely allowed inside through the same route and questioned why similar access was denied to them. Following discussions, police permitted tractors to enter the premises, after which the protesters raised slogans and reiterated their demand for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed trade agreement.BKU district president Sanju said the rally was organised to draw the Central Government’s attention to issues affecting farmers and the rural economy. He alleged that the proposed India–US Free Trade Agreement would have serious consequences for farmers, agricultural labourers, livestock rearers, small traders, micro and small-scale industries, and could adversely impact India’s food security and economic sovereignty. “The proposed agreement will negatively affect Indian agriculture and the livelihoods of millions of people. Farmers will not accept such a deal under any circumstances,” he said. The BKU leader urged the Union Government to abandon the proposed trade pact and warned that if farmers’ concerns were ignored, the Desh Bachao Morcha would launch a nationwide democratic movement against the agreement.
