Yamunanagar Police have arrested a man allegedly carrying 274.35 grams of heroin, also known as smack, with an estimated market value of nearly ₹9 lakh. The arrest was made by a team of Crime Branch-1 during a vehicle-checking operation near the Kanjanu canal bridge. Police said a case has been registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and that he has been taken on remand for further investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, district police teams have been conducting sustained action against suspected drug traffickers under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal. As part of this campaign, Crime Branch-1 acted on specific intelligence and intercepted a motorcycle during a checking operation.
Crime Branch-1 in-charge Raj Kumar said the team received confidential information that a young man would allegedly pass through the Kanjanu canal bridge area on a motorcycle while carrying narcotic substances. Acting on the information, a police team was constituted under the leadership of Assistant Sub-Inspector Sukhdev Singh. The team included Manish, Kuldeep Paswan, Amarjit Singh, Ashok and Sushil.
The police team reached the indicated location and established a checkpoint. Vehicles passing through the area were checked as part of the operation. After some time, police personnel noticed a young man approaching the location on a motorcycle.
The motorcycle was stopped and checked in the presence of a duty magistrate, as required during the search proceedings. Police said 274 grams and 35 milligrams of heroin were recovered from the young man during the search. The seized substance was estimated by police to be worth approximately ₹9 lakh.
The suspect was subsequently identified as Sachin, a resident of Sisauli Majri. Following the recovery, police registered a case against him under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The accused was produced before the court and taken on remand for further investigation. Police said the remand would be used to establish the source of the narcotic substance and determine whether the accused was allegedly connected with a wider supply network.
Investigators are also examining the motorcycle recovered from the accused. According to Crime Branch-1 in-charge Raj Kumar, the motorcycle did not have a number plate. Police will investigate the circumstances surrounding the vehicle during the remand period and determine its ownership and other relevant details.
The investigation will also focus on determining where the accused allegedly obtained the narcotic substance and where he intended to transport or distribute it. Police said these aspects are important to establish whether the case involves only the possession of narcotics or whether other persons may also be connected with the alleged supply chain.
The arrest forms part of the district police’s continuing campaign against drug trafficking. Police officials have maintained that action against narcotics-related offences remains a priority and that teams are being deployed on the basis of intelligence and other investigative inputs.
