With cyber fraud cases becoming an increasing concern, Yamunanagar district police has intensified its public awareness campaign to educate citizens about online scams and ways to protect themselves from cybercriminals. Under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Kamaldeep Goyal, the district police is conducting awareness activities at educational institutions, public places and crowded areas to help people recognise fraudulent activities and avoid falling victim to online scams.
As part of the ongoing campaign, Cyber Crime Police Station in-charge Ravinder Kumar visited Om Academy, Yamunanagar, and the Yamunanagar bus stand to interact with students, passengers and members of the public. During the awareness sessions, he explained common methods used by cybercriminals and shared practical precautions that people can follow while using digital services and social media. Awareness pamphlets containing information on cyber safety were also distributed among the participants.
The police said cybercriminals are continuously adopting new techniques to deceive people. Fraudsters often attempt to create a sense of urgency or fear and then persuade victims to disclose sensitive financial or personal information. The awareness campaign is therefore aimed at helping citizens understand such tactics and take appropriate precautions before responding to suspicious calls, messages, links or online offers.
During the programme at Om Academy, Ravinder Kumar explained different forms of online fraud to students and advised them to remain particularly careful while sharing personal and financial information. He stressed that bank account details, ATM or debit card information, one-time passwords, passwords and other confidential information should never be shared with unknown persons.
Students were also cautioned against clicking on suspicious links received through social media platforms, text messages or other digital communication channels. The police advised them to verify the authenticity of any message or offer before taking action, particularly when the communication involves money, personal information or access to an online account.
The Cyber Crime Police team also highlighted the risk of fraudulent employment offers. Cybercriminals may approach individuals with attractive job opportunities and subsequently demand money or sensitive information on different pretexts. People were advised to verify the authenticity of employment offers before sharing documents or making any payment.
The awareness programme also covered fraud carried out in the name of lotteries, investment schemes and online shopping. Citizens were advised to remain cautious about offers that appear unusually attractive or promise quick financial gains. The police emphasised that people should independently verify such claims rather than relying solely on information provided by unknown callers or messages.
At Yamunanagar bus stand, the police team interacted with passengers and members of the public and explained various measures for preventing cybercrime. Since public places bring together people from different backgrounds and age groups, the awareness activity provided an opportunity to reach a wider section of society.
The police informed citizens that immediate reporting is crucial if an online financial fraud takes place. Victims were advised to promptly contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline by dialling 1930 or register their complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Early reporting can assist the authorities in taking timely action and may improve the possibility of preventing further movement of the defrauded funds.
The police also encouraged people not to delay reporting an online fraud out of fear, embarrassment or uncertainty. Timely information can be important in financial cybercrime cases, particularly when efforts are required to trace or restrict transactions.
