Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamunanagar, celebrated National Sports Day with enthusiasm and sporting spirit, encouraging students to make physical fitness and sports an integral part of their daily lives. The event was organised with the special support of NGO A Soch Nai Soch and featured the participation of sporting personalities and guests associated with Indian Railways.
International footballer Manpreet Kaur of Indian Railways attended the programme as the chief guest, while Shashi Kumar Gupta and Pankaj Chugh, also associated with Indian Railways, were present as special guests. Their participation added significance to the celebrations and provided students with an opportunity to interact with personalities connected with the sporting field.
The programme was organised with the objective of highlighting the importance of sports and physical activity in student life. National Sports Day is observed to recognise the contribution of sporting excellence to society and to encourage young people to develop an active and healthy lifestyle. At the college, the occasion was used to motivate students to participate in sports while understanding the wider values associated with sporting activities.
Students participated enthusiastically in different races organised as part of the celebrations. The events witnessed energetic participation, with students displaying competitive spirit, determination and enthusiasm. The races provided participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their physical ability while also promoting the importance of regular exercise and participation in outdoor activities.
The presence of Manpreet Kaur, an international footballer representing Indian Railways, served as an additional source of motivation for the students. Her association with competitive football highlighted the opportunities that sporting talent can provide when combined with discipline, regular training and dedication.
Addressing the students, Head of the Commerce Department Dr Jaswinder Kaur appreciated their enthusiastic participation in the National Sports Day activities. She encouraged students to remain actively involved in sports and physical activities alongside their academic pursuits.
She emphasised that participation in sports contributes significantly to the overall development of young people. According to her, students can benefit from regular physical activity not only in terms of fitness but also through the development of confidence, discipline, teamwork and a positive approach towards challenges.
Dr Jaswinder Kaur encouraged the students to make physical activity a regular part of their routine rather than treating sports merely as an occasional extracurricular activity. She said active participation could help students maintain a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and physical well-being.
Head of the Sports Department Dr Sanjay Vij also addressed the gathering and explained the significance of National Sports Day. He highlighted the role of sports in maintaining physical fitness and developing discipline and sportsmanship among students.
Dr Vij stressed that sports teach young people several qualities that are useful beyond the playing field. Regular participation requires commitment, perseverance and respect for rules, while team-based sporting activities also encourage cooperation and a sense of responsibility towards others.
He said the sporting environment provides students with opportunities to understand the importance of effort and consistency. Winning and losing, he suggested, are both part of sporting life, and participation helps young people develop the ability to handle success as well as setbacks in a constructive manner.
The college’s National Sports Day celebrations therefore focused not merely on competition but also on creating awareness about the broader importance of physical activity. The organisers sought to encourage students to adopt healthier routines and recognise sports as an important component of personal development.
The participation of students in the races reflected the enthusiasm among the college community. Students competed with energy and maintained a strong sporting spirit throughout the activities. The events also created an atmosphere of camaraderie, with participants encouraging one another and enjoying the celebrations.
Winners of the various races were rewarded with cash prizes. The prizes added to the excitement among participants and recognised the efforts and performances of students who secured top positions in the competitions.
The organisers said such activities provide students with a platform to showcase their abilities while motivating others to participate. Sporting competitions also help create a culture in which physical fitness, healthy competition and teamwork are valued alongside academic achievement.
The college also used the occasion to reinforce the message that young people need to remain physically active in an increasingly technology-driven lifestyle. With students spending considerable time on academic work and digital devices, regular exercise and participation in outdoor sports can play an important role in maintaining an active routine.
The National Sports Day programme further underlined the importance of creating opportunities for students to explore different sporting activities. Exposure to competitions and interaction with experienced sportspersons can encourage students to identify their interests and potentially pursue sporting opportunities at higher levels.
The participation of guests from Indian Railways was particularly significant in this context, as sporting institutions and organisations can provide pathways for talented athletes to progress through competitive sport. The presence of an international footballer also demonstrated the possibilities available to students who pursue sports with commitment and determination.
The event concluded on an enthusiastic and memorable note. Students were encouraged to continue participating in sports and physical activities and to strive for excellence in their respective fields.
The college’s National Sports Day celebration conveyed a clear message that academic development and physical well-being should go hand in hand. Through such programmes, students can be encouraged to develop healthier lifestyles while acquiring qualities such as discipline, confidence, teamwork and sportsmanship.
The organisers expressed satisfaction with the response to the event and said the enthusiastic participation of students made the celebration meaningful. The programme also reinforced the importance of creating a positive sporting culture within educational institutions.
For the students of Guru Nanak Khalsa College, the celebration served as both a sporting event and a motivational experience. The participation of distinguished guests, competitive races, recognition of winners and messages on fitness collectively created an environment encouraging students to remain active and pursue excellence.
The event ended with students carrying forward the message of fitness and sporting spirit. The organisers hoped that the enthusiasm generated through the National Sports Day celebrations would encourage more students to regularly participate in sports and physical activities and make fitness an enduring part of their lives.
