The Government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri – Road Accident Victims Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment (PM-RAHAT) Scheme to ensure timely and cashless medical treatment for victims of road accidents across the country. Under the scheme, eligible road accident victims can receive cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh per victim for a maximum period of seven days from the date of the accident.
The scheme covers people injured in road accidents involving motor vehicles on roads across India, irrespective of their nationality, income or insurance status. The primary objective of PM-RAHAT is to save lives by ensuring that accident victims receive immediate medical attention without financial barriers.
The initiative also seeks to reduce deaths caused by delays in treatment during the critical golden hour following a road accident. Immediate medical intervention during this period can be crucial in preventing serious complications and improving the chances of survival.
Under the scheme, members of the public are advised to immediately inform the nearest police station or contact emergency services in the event of a road accident. The injured person can then be shifted without delay to an empanelled hospital for cashless treatment under the PM-RAHAT scheme.
The government has appealed to citizens to play a responsible role in preventing road accidents and helping victims. People have been urged to drive responsibly, follow traffic rules and always use appropriate safety equipment, including helmets for two-wheeler riders and seat belts in vehicles.
The government has also emphasised that members of the public should not hesitate to assist road accident victims in obtaining timely medical attention. Prompt intervention can make a critical difference, particularly when a victim requires urgent treatment during the golden hour.
The PM-RAHAT initiative is aimed at reducing the financial burden on accident victims and their families at a time when immediate medical treatment is the priority. By providing cashless treatment within the prescribed limits, the scheme seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not become a reason for delaying emergency medical care.
Citizens have therefore been encouraged to remain alert on the roads, follow safety precautions and assist accident victims in reaching medical facilities as quickly as possible. Responsible driving, timely reporting of accidents and immediate medical assistance can collectively contribute to saving valuable lives.
