Municipal Corporation organises school-level competition under Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, combines patriotism with lessons on waste segregation and environmental responsibility

Under the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, the Municipal Corporation organised a drawing competition at the Government Middle School in Chandpur, Ward No. 16, with the aim of promoting patriotism, cleanliness and environmental awareness among schoolchildren. The competition was organised on the directions of Mayor Suman Bahmani and Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad, with students participating enthusiastically and presenting colourful artwork based on the theme ‘Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Swachhta’.
The students used their creative expressions to convey messages of patriotism, cleanliness and civic responsibility. Through their drawings, they highlighted the importance of respecting the national flag while also keeping homes, schools, neighbourhoods and public spaces clean. The activity provided students with an opportunity to express their feelings towards the nation while simultaneously understanding their responsibility towards the environment.
During the programme, Akash Kumar, an expert from the Municipal Corporation’s Swachh Bharat Mission team, interacted with the students and explained the importance of four-bin waste segregation. He told the students that waste generated at homes should be separated at source into different categories, including wet waste, dry waste, domestic hazardous waste and other types of waste.
Akash Kumar explained that proper segregation of waste at the source makes the entire sanitation system more effective and helps ensure appropriate disposal and processing of different categories of waste. He said that when waste is mixed together, its scientific management becomes more difficult, whereas segregation at the household level can significantly improve waste management and cleanliness.
The students were encouraged to understand that cleanliness is not merely the responsibility of sanitation workers or municipal authorities but a collective responsibility shared by every citizen. They were urged not to throw waste in open areas, roads or public places and to motivate their family members and neighbours to follow proper waste disposal practices.
The Swachh Bharat Mission team also explained to the students that responsible waste management begins with small daily habits. Separating waste into the appropriate bins, avoiding littering, reducing unnecessary waste and ensuring that recyclable material is handled properly can collectively contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
The drawing competition was designed not only as a creative activity but also as an awareness initiative. By combining the message of the national flag with cleanliness, the Municipal Corporation sought to communicate that patriotism is also reflected through responsible citizenship and care for the surroundings.
The theme ‘Har Ghar Tiranga, Har Ghar Swachhta’ provided students with a meaningful connection between national pride and civic responsibility.
