Sirsa MP, former Union Minister, Congress general secretary and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Kumari Selja has expressed serious concern over the reported rise in criminal incidents across Haryana, alleging that the state’s law-and-order situation is deteriorating and creating a growing sense of insecurity among citizens.

Selja said incidents of murder, robbery, extortion and firing are being reported from different parts of the state, raising serious questions about the effectiveness of the government’s law-and-order machinery. She said the government should focus on preventing crime on the ground rather than relying on political statements or claims that the situation is under control.

She said criminals appeared increasingly emboldened, with serious incidents being reported even during broad daylight. Referring to recent incidents in Fatehabad and Panipat, Selja said the continuing reports of violent crime from different parts of Haryana raise an important question: why is the fear of the law and police apparently diminishing among criminals?

Selja also referred to the reported firing incident in Rohtak, in which motorcycle-borne miscreants allegedly opened fire at the office of Congress MLA Balram Dangi, located opposite a police station. She termed the reported incident extremely serious, saying that an attack on the office of an elected representative in such circumstances raises concerns about the overall security environment.

“When public representatives, traders and shopkeepers themselves do not feel secure, it is natural for ordinary families to be worried about their own safety,” she said.

Selja said Haryana has traditionally been known for its development, prosperity, social harmony and its hardworking farmers, soldiers and sportspersons. However, she added that repeated reports of serious crimes were damaging the image of the state. She said failure to take effective action against criminals, habitual offenders and organised gangs could further embolden them and increase fear among the public. The government, she said, must strengthen policing and launch effective action against those involved in serious and organised crimes.

Selja stressed that protecting the life, liberty and property of citizens is the government’s foremost responsibility. She said law and order cannot be judged merely through official statistics or government claims and that the administration must also acknowledge the concerns being raised by people on the ground.

She further urged the government not to dismiss questions raised by the Opposition on law and order as political criticism. According to Selja, people of Haryana want to know why criminals are becoming increasingly fearless and when they will be able to live in a genuinely secure environment.

She called upon the state government to fix accountability, take firm action against criminals and strengthen policing to ensure that the rule of law is firmly established across Haryana.
