New road and stormwater drainage project aims to eliminate chronic waterlogging, improve connectivity and strengthen urban infrastructure

The Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation on Tuesday launched a ₹21.78 lakh civic infrastructure project in Ward No. 7’s Roop Nagar Colony, marking another step in the city’s ongoing urban development drive. The project includes the construction of the Gurudwara Sahib Road along with a modern stormwater drainage network, a long-awaited initiative expected to permanently address waterlogging and improve road connectivity for hundreds of residents.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Mayor Suman Bahmani in the presence of former Haryana Cabinet Minister Kanwar Pal, Ward Councillor Priyank Sharma, senior Municipal Corporation officials and local residents. The programme began with the traditional coconut-breaking ceremony, following which the leaders formally inaugurated the development work.
Addressing residents, Mayor Suman Bahmani said the Municipal Corporation is committed to ensuring that every neighbourhood receives quality civic infrastructure. She said the Roop Nagar project is part of a broader strategy to modernise roads, drainage systems and other essential public facilities across the city.
“The objective of the Municipal Corporation is not merely to construct roads but to create long-term solutions to civic problems. The new stormwater drainage system will significantly reduce waterlogging during the monsoon and improve the daily lives of local residents,” she said.
The Mayor instructed engineers and contractors to maintain the highest standards of construction quality throughout the project. She warned that any negligence in the use of construction material or execution of the work would not be tolerated and directed officials to ensure strict monitoring at every stage.
Bahmani said the civic body has accelerated infrastructure development in recent months, with projects related to roads, drainage, stormwater lines, parks and community facilities being undertaken in several wards simultaneously. She added that balanced urban development remains a priority, with every locality receiving attention based on its infrastructure requirements.
Former Cabinet Minister Kanwar Pal said the state government and the Municipal Corporation are working in close coordination to improve civic amenities across Yamunanagar. He noted that residents of Roop Nagar had been demanding a permanent solution to waterlogging and deteriorating road conditions for a long time, and the project would finally address those concerns.
He said better roads and an efficient drainage network are essential for improving the quality of urban life and supporting sustainable city development. According to him, infrastructure projects are being implemented based on public demand and local requirements to ensure that development benefits reach every section of society.
The proposed stormwater drainage line is expected to improve rainwater management significantly by preventing water accumulation during heavy rainfall. Besides reducing inconvenience for commuters, the project is also expected to minimise damage to roads, enhance sanitation and improve the overall environment of the locality.
Residents attending the programme welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the long-pending drainage problem would finally be resolved. Many said waterlogging during the rainy season had frequently disrupted daily life, damaged roads and made movement difficult for schoolchildren, senior citizens and commuters.
Municipal officials said the project has been designed to improve both mobility and public convenience while ensuring durable infrastructure capable of meeting future urban needs. Engineers have been directed to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe while adhering to prescribed engineering standards.
Among those present at the inauguration were Assistant Engineer Muneshwar Bhardwaj, Junior Engineer Gopal, former councillor Sanjay Rana, Birkha Ram, Avtar Singh Tari, Ramesh Sharma, Ashok Mehendiratta, J.N. Kashyap, Sanjeev Jangra, Trilok Singh, several BJP workers and a large number of local residents.
With infrastructure development gathering momentum across Yamunanagar, the Municipal Corporation expects projects such as the Roop Nagar road and stormwater drainage scheme to improve civic services, strengthen urban resilience and enhance the overall quality of life for citizens.
