Mayor, MLA, civic officials and councillors to lead citywide plantation drive aimed at expanding green cover and promoting environmental sustainability

In a major push towards urban greening and environmental conservation, the Yamunanagar Municipal Corporation has launched an ambitious plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, with plans to plant nearly 2,700 saplings across all 22 municipal wards in the city.
The initiative is aimed at increasing the city’s green cover, improving air quality and encouraging greater public participation in environmental protection.
Plantation activities will be led by Mayor Suman Bahmani, Yamunanagar MLA Ghanshyam Dass Arora, Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar, along with councillors and public representatives from all wards.
Officials said the Forest Department will support the campaign by supplying a wide range of indigenous tree species, including banyan, neem, peepal, jamun, amla, mango and tamarind, which are well suited to the local climate and play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance.
The Municipal Corporation has prepared a ward-wise plantation plan to ensure equitable distribution of saplings throughout the city. Around 200 saplings each will be planted in Wards 1, 3, 4, 11, 12, 18 and 19, while 50 saplings each will be planted in the remaining wards.

In addition, plantation drives will also be conducted in public parks, government schools and other available open spaces to maximise the city’s green footprint. Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad said the campaign forms part of the corporation’s broader commitment to sustainable urban development and climate resilience.
“Our objective is not only to plant trees but also to create a healthier and greener environment for future generations.
Native tree species improve biodiversity, reduce pollution, provide shade and contribute significantly to environmental conservation,” he said.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar emphasised that public participation is crucial for the long-term success of the initiative. He appealed to residents, educational institutions, resident welfare associations and community organisations to actively participate in plantation activities and take responsibility for nurturing the saplings after they are planted.
Officials noted that merely planting trees is not sufficient; their protection and regular maintenance are equally important to ensure they grow into healthy trees that benefit the community for decades.
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign has emerged as a nationwide environmental movement encouraging citizens to plant and care for a tree in honour of their mothers while strengthening India’s efforts to combat climate change and environmental degradation.
The Municipal Corporation expressed confidence that the campaign would not only beautify the city but also contribute to cleaner air, reduced pollution levels and a healthier urban ecosystem. Citizens have been encouraged to join the drive and make tree plantation a collective responsibility for a greener Yamunanagar.
