A swift and compassionate response by Yamunanagar Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar helped ensure the timely medical treatment of a teenage participant who suddenly collapsed during the “Nashe Se Jung – Yamunanagar Ke Sang” anti-drug marathon held on Sunday morning in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

The incident occurred near Agrasen Chowk during the 10-kilometre marathon, briefly creating concern among participants and officials. However, Dheeraj Kumar acted immediately, demonstrating both administrative efficiency and humanitarian concern by personally coordinating the rescue and medical assistance.

The anti-drug marathon, flagged off by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini from Matka Chowk, Jagadhri, witnessed the participation of thousands of people from across Haryana and neighbouring states. The event aimed to spread awareness against substance abuse while promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

According to eyewitnesses, the teenage girl, who was participating in the 10-kilometre race, suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed on the road after covering a short distance near Agrasen Chowk. The unexpected incident caused momentary panic among nearby runners and volunteers.

Without wasting any time, Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar, who was accompanying the marathon, rushed to the spot. With the assistance of municipal staff and volunteers, he ensured that the unconscious girl was immediately shifted to a safe location away from the running route.

Realising the urgency of the situation, he promptly arranged for an ambulance and supervised her transfer to the hospital for emergency treatment. Rather than limiting his role to coordinating the rescue, Dheeraj Kumar also accompanied the girl to the hospital, where he remained in touch with doctors and monitored her treatment until her condition stabilised.

Hospital sources later confirmed that the girl responded well to medical care and her health began improving soon after receiving treatment. The timely intervention prevented the situation from becoming more serious.

People present at both the marathon venue and the hospital appreciated the prompt action taken by the Additional Municipal Commissioner. Many participants praised his calm response, saying his quick decision-making ensured that the girl received immediate medical attention at a critical moment.

The incident highlighted the importance of emergency preparedness during large public gatherings. The district administration had deployed ambulances, medical teams and emergency response personnel along the marathon route to deal with any unforeseen situations. Officials stated that comprehensive medical arrangements had been made throughout the event, enabling emergency teams to respond without delay.

The successful handling of the medical emergency also reflected the coordination between civic officials, healthcare personnel and volunteers deployed during the marathon.

Beyond promoting the message of a drug-free society, Sunday’s event also demonstrated how public officials can go beyond their administrative responsibilities when human life is at stake. The compassionate response by Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar drew widespread appreciation from participants, local residents and officials alike.

The marathon itself witnessed the participation of thousands of citizens who pledged to support the campaign against drug abuse and promote healthier lifestyles across Haryana. While the event concluded successfully, the incident served as a reminder that efficient emergency response systems remain an essential component of every large-scale public programme.

Thanks to the prompt medical assistance and the timely intervention of officials, the young participant’s condition improved, allowing the event to end on a reassuring note.
