The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Friday staged a protest in Yamunanagar against the alleged lathi-charge and mistreatment of students and young protesters during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The party described the police action as an assault on democratic rights and demanded a fair judicial inquiry into the incident.

Led by former MLA Dilbag Singh, INLD leaders and workers assembled at the Jagadhri Grain Market Gate before marching to the Mini Secretariat while raising slogans against the government. The protesters later submitted a memorandum to the President of India through the Deputy Commissioner, demanding an impartial investigation into the incident and immediate action against those found responsible.

Addressing the gathering, Dilbag Singh alleged that students and youth holding a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20 over the alleged NEET paper leak and other examination-related issues were subjected to excessive police force, including baton charges, tear gas and pellet guns, leaving several students injured.

“The youth had gathered peacefully to demand justice and a transparent examination system. Instead of listening to their concerns, they were met with force. Such actions are against the spirit of democracy and violate the constitutional right to peaceful protest,” Singh said.

He maintained that every citizen, particularly students striving for a better future, has the right to express grievances through peaceful means. According to him, governments should resolve the concerns of young people through dialogue rather than suppressing their voices.

The memorandum submitted by the party urged the President to order an independent judicial inquiry into the incident and ensure strict action against officials responsible for the alleged use of force against students.

The INLD also demanded stringent punishment for those involved in the alleged NEET paper leak, greater transparency and accountability in the country’s examination system, and a time-bound recruitment process for government jobs.

In addition, the party called for the resignation of the Union Education Minister, relaxation in examination fees and upper age limits for competitive examinations, and adequate compensation and free medical treatment for students injured during the protest.

Party leaders said protecting the rights of students and ensuring the credibility of India’s examination system should remain a national priority. They asserted that young people deserve justice, fair opportunities and an education system free from irregularities.

A large number of INLD office-bearers and workers participated in the demonstration.
