Cancer Is Not Incurable; Timely Diagnosis Can Make Treatment Possible: Dr Anil Aggarwal
Early detection, awareness and timely medical care can help patients fight the disease, says Jagadhri physician

Cancer is often viewed as a disease that leaves little hope, but timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can make a significant difference, said Dr Anil Aggarwal, senior physician at Aggarwal Hospital, Jagadhri. Speaking on the occasion of World Cancer Day, he urged people not to ignore warning signs and to seek medical advice without delay.
Dr Aggarwal said that around 3,800 cancer patients have been reported in Yamunanagar district. Oral, breast, cervical and lung cancers are among the commonly seen cases. He identified tobacco and gutka consumption, along with delayed diagnosis, as major factors contributing to the disease burden.
He stressed that awareness is important because many people postpone medical consultation until symptoms become severe. A growing lump, a mouth ulcer that persists for more than two weeks—particularly among tobacco users—unexplained weight loss, a prolonged cough or change in voice should not be ignored.
Other warning signs, he said, may include a lump in the breast, blood coming from the nipple, blood in stool or urine, and a wound that does not heal. Such symptoms do not necessarily mean cancer, but they require assessment by a qualified medical professional.
Lifestyle Changes Can Reduce Risk
Dr Aggarwal said that a substantial proportion of cancers may be preventable through healthier habits. He advised people to stay away from tobacco in all forms, including gutka, bidi and cigarettes, and to avoid alcohol. A balanced diet with vegetables and fruits, limiting junk food and regular physical activity can support overall health.
He recommended regular medical check-ups, particularly for people above 40, and said women should discuss appropriate breast health screening and self-examination with their doctor. Screening needs can vary according to age, family history and individual risk, so medical guidance is important.
Treatment Options Have Advanced
According to Dr Aggarwal, cancer treatment has advanced and may include surgery, chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy, depending on the type and stage of cancer and the patient’s condition. He said laparoscopic surgery is also available for suitable cases.
He emphasized that treatment decisions should be made by specialists after proper investigations. Patients and families should avoid panic, seek reliable medical advice and follow the recommended treatment plan.
“Do not fear cancer; fight it,” Dr Aggarwal said, calling for greater public awareness, early consultation and support for people undergoing treatment. He said timely action and a positive approach can help patients face the disease with confidence.
