Aditya Surjewala Accuses BJP Governments of Curtailing Freedom of Expression and Right to Protest
Congress MLA from Kaithal Aditya Surjewala visited the Radaur grain market on Saturday to review arrangements and later spoke to journalists at the establishment of Congress leader and former Zila Parishad member Shivkumar Sandhala. During the interaction, he criticised the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Haryana, alleging that citizens’ constitutional rights were being undermined.
Surjewala said the Constitution, framed under the leadership of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, guarantees freedom of expression and the right to protest, and alleged that these rights were being curtailed. Referring to the farmers’ agitation against the three farm laws, he claimed that the use of force and the registration of FIRs had been used to intimidate protesting farmers.
He also raised allegations concerning voter-list irregularities, saying young people, students and opposition parties demonstrating under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership faced force when they sought answers. Surjewala appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to listen to the concerns of protesting youth and students instead of addressing them in derogatory terms.
Surjewala demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and called for votes removed during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to be restored. He said a strong democracy depends on respect for citizens’ rights and the voices of those who raise concerns. Former MLA Lehri Singh, Devender Singh, Rahul Kamboj Sandhala, Barkha Ram Pansra, Harpal Sudhail, Balwinder Sandhay and Sanju Dhaulra were among those present.
