Fifteen students participate in creative contest as Dr Karuna highlights career opportunities in economics and introduces students to Amartya Sen’s research

The Department of Economics at Maharaja Agrasen College, Jagadhri, organised a poster-making competition to encourage students to develop greater interest in economics and explore the subject through creative and academic expression. The programme was presided over by Officeating Principal Dr Karuna, who interacted with students and highlighted the wider academic and career opportunities associated with the discipline.
Addressing the participants, Dr Karuna said activities such as poster-making competitions provide students with an opportunity to engage with academic subjects in an innovative manner. She said such competitions can help students develop a deeper interest in their subjects while encouraging them to present complex concepts in a simple, creative and visually effective form.
During her interaction with the students, Dr Karuna explained various aspects of economics and discussed the relevance of the subject in higher education and professional life. She encouraged students to look beyond textbook learning and understand how economic principles influence society, markets, public policy and everyday life.
She also briefed the students about the career opportunities available to those who pursue economics. Dr Karuna said students with an academic background in economics can explore opportunities in the Indian Economic Service, the Reserve Bank of India and various other banking and financial institutions.
She encouraged students to understand the scope of the subject and make informed choices about higher education and careers. According to her, economics offers opportunities in several areas, including government services, banking, research and other professional fields.
Dr Karuna also introduced students to the research work and contributions of Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen. By discussing the work of a globally recognised economist, she sought to give students a broader perspective on the role of economic research in understanding social and developmental issues.
The poster-making competition was organised and conducted by Associate Professor Poonam Garg. A total of 15 students participated in the event and presented posters based on themes related to different areas of economics.
The topics selected for the competition included the principles of microeconomics, the principles of macroeconomics and the life and contributions of famous economists. These themes gave students an opportunity to combine their understanding of economic concepts with creative presentation.
Students participated enthusiastically in the competition and displayed their knowledge through posters prepared on the assigned themes. The activity provided a platform for students to present economic concepts in a visually engaging manner while demonstrating their understanding of the subject.
The competition also encouraged students to explore economics beyond conventional classroom discussions. By working on topics such as microeconomic and macroeconomic principles and the lives of leading economists, participants were able to revisit important concepts while developing their creative and presentation skills.
The results of the competition were announced following the evaluation of the entries. Diya and Dipanshu of BA First Year jointly secured the first position. Vansh of BA First Year secured the second position, while Bhavna of BA First Year secured the third position. Aniket of BA Second Year received the consolation position, while Vaibhav Gangwani of BA First Year was awarded the consolation prize.
The winners and participants were recognised for their efforts, with certificates presented to the successful students. The recognition encouraged students to continue participating in academic and co-curricular activities and to explore innovative ways of presenting their understanding of different subjects.
The event also highlighted the role of the Department of Economics in creating opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with practical and creative activities. Competitions of this nature can help students improve communication, presentation and analytical skills while encouraging them to engage more actively with their academic disciplines.
The discussion on career opportunities was another important aspect of the programme. Students were informed that an economics education can provide a foundation for pursuing specialised academic programmes and competitive examinations as well as careers in government institutions, banking and financial services.
Dr Karuna’s interaction with the students also focused on developing an appreciation for economic thought and research. The reference to Amartya Sen’s research work provided students with an example of how academic research in economics can address wider questions concerning society, development and human well-being.
The competition allowed students to bring together academic knowledge and creativity. The selected themes required participants to understand economic concepts and present them in a manner that could communicate the subject effectively through visual material.

Associate Professor Poonam Garg coordinated the programme and ensured its smooth conduct. At the conclusion of the event, she expressed gratitude to the principal, faculty members and students for their cooperation and participation.
The programme concluded with the distribution of certificates to the winning students. The event served as an opportunity for students of Maharaja Agrasen College to strengthen their understanding of economics while also developing creativity and presentation skills.
