Students share memories, career aspirations and future plans as the Department of Social Work marks the completion of their two-year academic journey during National Social Work Week

The Department of Social Work at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamunanagar, organised an emotional farewell Celebration for the students of Master of Social Work (MSW) Fourth Semester, Batch 2024–26, marking the completion of their two-year academic journey. The programme was organised during the students’ practical work viva voce examination as part of the observance of National Social Work Week, which has been underway since August 20.
The farewell provided an opportunity for students and faculty members to reflect on the academic, professional and personal journey shared over the past two years. The occasion was marked by memories, gratitude, emotional moments and discussions about the students’ future careers and responsibilities as social work professionals.
The programme held special significance as the outgoing students prepare to move from the academic environment into professional life, higher education, community service and various fields related to social development and welfare. During the ceremony, students recalled their experiences in the department, including classroom learning, practical work, field exposure and the relationships developed with fellow students and faculty members.
Principal Dr Arvinder Singh Bhalla extended his heartfelt wishes to the outgoing students and congratulated them on completing an important phase of their academic journey. He wished them success in their future endeavours and encouraged them to use their education and professional knowledge meaningfully in their respective careers.
Addressing the students, the Principal highlighted the importance of pursuing professional goals with dedication, responsibility and a commitment to social welfare. He conveyed his best wishes to the MSW students as they prepare to explore new opportunities after completing their postgraduate programme.
The programme was also attended by Dr C.P. Singh, former Head of the Department of Social Work and Professor at Kurukshetra University, who was present as a special guest. His presence added significance to the occasion, particularly as the students discussed the academic relevance and professional opportunities associated with the field of social work.
Faculty members of the Department of Social Work were also present to bid farewell to the outgoing batch. These included Dr Sahib Singh, Head of the Department of Social Work; Associate Professor Dr Hemant Mishra; and Assistant Professors Ms Anika and Ms Neelam.
During the interaction, the students shared memorable moments from their time in the department and spoke about the experiences that shaped their understanding of social work. They reflected on the emotional connection developed with the department and expressed gratitude to their teachers and mentors for their guidance throughout the programme.
The discussions also focused on important professional aspects, including job placements, career opportunities, higher education and the growing relevance of a Master of Social Work degree in different sectors.
Students exchanged views on the various career paths available to social work graduates, including opportunities in non-governmental organisations, community development, social welfare institutions, healthcare, education, counselling, corporate social responsibility and other development-oriented sectors.
The programme also provided an opportunity to discuss how the knowledge and skills gained during the MSW course can be applied to address social challenges and contribute to community development. Faculty members encouraged the students to approach their professional lives with sensitivity and a strong sense of responsibility.
The teachers congratulated the outgoing students and urged them to uphold the fundamental values associated with the profession of social work. They encouraged the students to carry forward the principles of empathy, service, dignity, equality and social justice in their future professional and personal lives.
Faculty members emphasised that social work is not merely an academic discipline or a professional qualification but also involves a commitment to understanding social realities and contributing positively to the lives of individuals and communities.
The outgoing students were encouraged to remain connected with the values and learning gained during their academic journey and to apply them while working in different professional environments.
