Property tax defaulters in Yamunanagar-Jagadhri have been given a final opportunity to clear their outstanding dues by August 31 and avail themselves of a 75 per cent waiver on accumulated interest under the Haryana Government’s tax relief scheme. Municipal Corporation Mayor Suman Bahmani and Commissioner Mahabir Prasad have urged all eligible property owners to make use of the concession before the deadline, warning that strict recovery action will begin from September 1.

According to the Municipal Corporation authorities, property owners who deposit their outstanding property tax by August 31 will receive a waiver of 75 per cent of the interest payable on the eligible dues. However, those who fail to take advantage of the scheme within the prescribed period will have to pay the outstanding tax along with the full applicable interest.

The Municipal Corporation has also made it clear that properties belonging to major defaulters may face sealing action after the deadline. Officials said that notices are being issued to property tax defaulters whose outstanding dues exceed ₹1 lakh, giving them an opportunity to clear their liabilities before enforcement proceedings begin.

Mayor Suman Bahmani and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mahabir Prasad said the August 31 deadline should not be treated casually because no further relaxation has been indicated after the expiry of the current concession period. They appealed to property owners to deposit their dues within the prescribed time and avoid additional financial liability as well as possible sealing proceedings.

The officials said the Haryana Government had earlier introduced a 100 per cent interest waiver for taxpayers depositing their property tax in a single payment between June 1 and June 30. The scheme generated a significant response from taxpayers across the Municipal Corporation area.

During that period, taxpayers deposited approximately ₹16.40 crore in property tax and around ₹1.46 crore in fire tax with the Municipal Corporation. Despite the substantial collections, a considerable number of property owners continued to have outstanding tax liabilities.

Keeping such defaulters in view, the government subsequently provided another opportunity to clear the dues with a concession on interest. Under the revised arrangement, eligible property owners have been granted a 75 per cent waiver on interest payable on outstanding property tax.

The concession applies to outstanding property tax for the period from 2010-11 to 2024-25, as specified under the government notification. Property owners who clear their eligible outstanding tax by August 31 can therefore benefit from the substantial reduction in interest liability.

Municipal Corporation officials have appealed particularly to large defaulters to take immediate action rather than wait until the final days of the concession period. Authorities have warned that after August 31, the Corporation will begin serving notices to defaulters and initiate the process of sealing properties where required under the applicable provisions.

The administration said the purpose of the concession is to provide taxpayers with an opportunity to settle their old dues while also improving municipal revenue collection. Property tax is an important source of revenue for urban local bodies and is used to support civic infrastructure and public services.

The Corporation has also clarified that taxpayers seeking to avail themselves of the scheme must comply with the prescribed conditions. The benefit of the interest waiver will be available only to those who deposit their outstanding amount within the stipulated period and also complete self-verification of their property.

Property owners can deposit their property tax and obtain information about the scheme through the Citizen Facilitation Centres located at Municipal Corporation offices at Jagadhri, Kanhaiya Sahib Chowk and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk.

Officials have advised taxpayers to verify their property details and outstanding amount before making payment so that the required formalities can be completed without unnecessary delay. Those who have received notices from the Municipal Corporation, particularly large defaulters, have been urged to respond within the prescribed period.

Mayor Suman Bahmani said that the concession provides taxpayers with a significant opportunity to settle their pending liabilities at a reduced financial burden. She urged residents not to wait until the last date and to complete the payment process well in advance.

Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad also stressed the importance of timely compliance. He said that the Corporation would continue to facilitate taxpayers in completing the necessary procedures, but after the deadline, recovery action would be taken against those who continue to default.

The authorities have reiterated that the objective is not merely to initiate enforcement proceedings but to encourage taxpayers to voluntarily clear their outstanding liabilities and contribute towards strengthening civic administration.

The warning regarding sealing action is particularly significant for large property tax defaulters. According to the Corporation, notices are already being issued to property owners with outstanding dues of more than ₹1 lakh. If such taxpayers fail to clear their dues by August 31, the Corporation may proceed with sealing action from September 1 in accordance with the applicable rules.

Officials have also pointed out that after the concession period ends, the outstanding tax will be recovered along with the full applicable interest, making delayed payment financially more burdensome.

Residents have therefore been encouraged to use the remaining period to verify their property records, calculate their outstanding dues and complete payment under the 75 per cent interest waiver scheme.

The Municipal Corporation has appealed to all property tax defaulters to treat August 31 as the final deadline and avoid waiting for enforcement notices. Officials said timely payment would help taxpayers benefit from the interest waiver while also preventing possible sealing proceedings against properties with substantial outstanding dues.

The Corporation has also urged citizens to cooperate with municipal officials in property verification and tax-related procedures. Self-verification is an important condition for obtaining the benefit of the current scheme, and taxpayers have been advised to complete the process along with payment.

With the deadline approaching, the Municipal Corporation is expected to intensify its communication with major defaulters and continue issuing notices to property owners with significant outstanding liabilities.

The civic body has once again appealed to all eligible property owners to make full use of the government’s relief provision before August 31. Officials reiterated that after the deadline, the 75 per cent interest waiver will no longer be available under the current concession, and outstanding property tax will be recovered along with the applicable interest.

The administration has urged residents to consider the current opportunity as a chance to settle old property tax liabilities, avoid enforcement action and contribute to the financial resources required for improving civic amenities across Yamunanagar-Jagadhri.
