Experts highlight multidisciplinary learning, innovation and skill-based education as key pillars shaping the future of higher education

Marking the fifth anniversary of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of DAV Girls College, Yamunanagar, organised an awareness programme on the theme “National Education Policy 2020: The Future of Higher Education.” The event focused on familiarising students and faculty members with the transformative vision of the policy and its role in reshaping India’s higher education landscape.
The programme was presided over by Officiating Principal Dr Surinder Kaur, while IIC Convener Vivek and Programme Coordinator Nishi Grover were also present. Kanika Goyal, Head of the Department of Mathematics, addressed the gathering as the keynote speaker.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Surinder Kaur said the objective of the programme was to create awareness about the goals of the National Education Policy and the long-term reforms it envisions for higher education. She noted that NEP 2020 seeks to move beyond conventional degree-oriented learning by promoting skill-based, multidisciplinary, innovation-driven and employment-focused education, enabling students to become more adaptable in a rapidly evolving global environment.

Delivering the keynote address, Kanika Goyal explained the major features of the policy, including multidisciplinary education, flexible curriculum, multiple entry and exit options, the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), enhanced emphasis on research and innovation, digital learning, internships and industry-oriented skill development. She highlighted that these reforms are designed to prepare students for future academic and professional challenges while encouraging lifelong learning.
As part of the programme, the college also organised a poster exhibition showcasing the objectives and salient features of the National Education Policy 2020. Students displayed a range of creative posters explaining the policy’s key provisions, making the exhibition an engaging learning experience for both students and faculty members. The exhibition drew appreciation for effectively presenting complex educational reforms in a visually appealing manner.
The programme concluded with an interactive session encouraging students to make the most of the opportunities offered under the National Education Policy by actively participating in research, innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development initiatives. Speakers urged students to embrace continuous learning and equip themselves with competencies required for the future workforce.
College authorities said such awareness programmes play an important role in helping students understand ongoing educational reforms and prepare them to contribute effectively to a knowledge-driven economy.
