The Department of Biotechnology at Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Yamunanagar, organised an orientation programme to warmly welcome newly admitted students and provide them with a comprehensive introduction to the college’s academic environment, departmental activities, laboratory facilities, skill-development initiatives and opportunities available to them during their academic journey.

The programme was designed to help new students become familiar with the functioning of the department and understand the academic and practical opportunities available to them. Faculty members interacted with the students and encouraged them to actively participate in classroom learning, laboratory activities, co-curricular programmes and other initiatives that can contribute to their overall development.

College Principal Dr. Arvinder Singh Bhalla welcomed the newly admitted students and congratulated them on beginning an important new phase of their academic journey. He said that an orientation programme provides students with a strong foundation for their college experience and helps them understand the academic environment before they begin their regular studies.

Dr. Bhalla encouraged students to make full use of the academic facilities and opportunities provided by the college. He emphasised the importance of developing curiosity, discipline and an innovative approach to learning. He said that higher education is not limited to obtaining a degree but should also help students develop confidence, practical abilities, critical thinking and a willingness to explore new areas of knowledge.

He advised the students to maintain regularity in their academic work and participate actively in departmental activities. According to him, students who make effective use of the facilities available to them can gain valuable practical experience and develop skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

Head of the Department of Biotechnology Dr. Nidhi Mahendru also welcomed the new students and introduced them to the scope and importance of biotechnology as an emerging field. She said that biotechnology is developing rapidly and offers significant opportunities in diverse sectors, including research, healthcare, agriculture and industry.

Dr. Mahendru encouraged students to develop a strong academic foundation while also gaining practical exposure to the subject. She highlighted the importance of understanding scientific concepts through laboratory work and taking an active interest in research and innovation.

She said that biotechnology combines scientific knowledge with practical applications and therefore students should approach their studies with curiosity and an open mind. Exposure to laboratory techniques, research-based learning and skill-development programmes can help students understand how biotechnology is applied to real-world challenges.

Assistant Professor Dr. Sonali interacted with the newly admitted students and provided them with information about laboratory work, departmental activities and various skill-development initiatives. She encouraged students to participate actively in laboratory sessions and academic programmes rather than limiting their learning to classroom instruction.

Dr. Sonali stressed that practical experience is an essential part of biotechnology education. She explained that regular laboratory exposure enables students to understand scientific processes more effectively and develop confidence in handling practical assignments.

She also emphasised the importance of continuous learning and active participation in academic activities. According to her, students should make efforts to improve their skills throughout their college years and use every available opportunity to gain practical knowledge.

The orientation programme also focused on the importance of holistic development. Faculty members advised them to maintain discipline, remain curious and seek guidance whenever required.
