The Municipal Corporation Yamunanagar-Jagadhri has intensified its public awareness campaign under the ‘Cleanliness Drives Away Disease’ (Safai Apnao, Bimari Bhagao) initiative, educating residents on scientific waste management through the four-bin waste segregation system.
Organised under the directions of Mayor Suman Bahmani and Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Prasad, the campaign was conducted across Ward 7 and Ward 22, covering Sector 17, Housing Board Colony, Sanjay Vihar, Govindpuri and adjoining localities. Teams from the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) visited households to encourage residents to segregate waste at the source and adopt sustainable waste disposal practices.
During the campaign, IEC Expert Akash Kumar explained the purpose of the four-colour bin system. Residents were advised to use the green bin for biodegradable waste such as fruit and vegetable peels, leftover food, tea leaves, flowers and eggshells; the blue bin for recyclable dry waste, including paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans and glass; the red bin for sanitary waste such as sanitary pads, diapers, bandages, cotton, used masks and gloves; and the black bin for domestic hazardous waste, including batteries, LED bulbs, tube lights, paint containers, pesticide containers, expired medicines, nail polish, thermometers and small electronic waste.
The municipal team also encouraged residents to adopt home composting, explaining how biodegradable household waste can be converted into organic manure. Officials said the practice would help reduce the volume of waste reaching dumping sites while providing environmentally friendly compost for household gardens.
Mayor Suman Bahmani appealed to citizens to actively support the city’s cleanliness mission by ensuring proper waste segregation, responsible disposal and greater public participation in environmental conservation. She said collective efforts are essential to achieving the Municipal Corporation’s goal of building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Yamunanagar.
